Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Matthias Wilhoit was a Virginia colonist.

Matthias was born about 1723. He is the son of Michael Willheit and Anna Hengsteler. He married Mary Ballenger in 1744. [1]

October 21, 1762, Matthias and wife Mary sold 60 acres of land for 20.10.0 on the west side of Muddy Run to Matthias Rouse, part of a greater tract granted to Mattias' father by patent dated September 28, 1728 for 289 acres of land, signed by Matthias and Mary Wilhoit and witnessed by Samual Klug and Michael Thomas (Culpeper D.B. "D", p. 140).

September 13, 1771, Matthias sold to Nicholas Criger 20 acres of land for 5 pounds which was bought from George Rootes (Rouse) adjoining Smith and others. Signed by Matthias (no signature by wife) and witnessed by Wiliam Chapmen, Mark Finks and Abraham Buford (Culpepper D.B. "F" p. 347).

September 30, 1771, Matthias sold to Adam Fisher 100 acres of land for 20 pounds bought from George Rootes. Signed by Matthias Wilhoit (No wife signed) and witnessed by William Chapman, Abraham Buford and Mark Finks.

May 28, 1772, Matthias and wife Hannah sold 50 acres of land to John Cubbage for 15 pounds. Signed by Matthias Wilhoit and Hannah Wihoit and witnessed by Daniel Brown and John Lovel, Jr. This parcel may have been Hannah's since the land is not listed as part of Matthias' inheritance from his father.

Tradition states that Matthias went to North Carolina to visit his sister Eva (Wilhoit) Holt about 1779 and decided to stay there.

He is listed on the 1781 Official list of recruits for Military Service from Culpepper County for the Continental Army; however, it is believed that he was already living in Orange County, North Carolina.

The name Matthias Wilhoit does not appear on the 1782 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia and tradition states that Matthias went to North Carolina to visit his sister Eva (Wilhoit) Holt in about 1779 and decided to stay there.

August 6, 1781, Matthias "Willhide" sold to the County of Orange, North Carolina twenty two bushels of corn and seven pounds of bacon for seventeen and three eights Spanish milled dollars.[2]

He passed away after 1781.[3]

The first alleged wife of Matthias Wilhoit is currently Mary Ballenger...but his wife Hannah is named in a deed by 1772. Meanwhile, the will of Mary Ballenger's father, Edward Ballenger, was later dated 9 Dec 1779, naming his daughter Mary Wilhoit and grandson Gabriel Wilhoit, who happened to be the eldest son of MICHAEL Wilheit (named in his will). Michael's wife is currently alleged to be Mary Shirley however, Mary Shirley is proved to be the wife of Matthias' son Tobias Wilhoit by his children applying for his Rev Vet pension in 1844. I've placed this information in the research notes on Edward Ballenger's profile, after seeing his estimated birth year was changed to fit Matthias' wife, who probably should be an Unknown given the documentation. It appears this issue has prior been pointed out on the profile of Mary Ballenger by Sandra Vines but has not been addressed. If there are no primary sources for these marriages, the will of Ballenger is the best documentation we have, along with Tobias' Rev Vet pension file, which is transcribed here. https://revwarapps.org/r11542.pdf
