"Wilkerson" is most likely a variant of "Wilkenson", brought about by local pronunciation of the name in Orange and Chatham Counties, North Carolina. A story, passed down through descendants of this individual's daughter Margaret "Peggy" Wilkerson Johnson, says that the family originated in Ireland and that Margaret's father returned there "with her red-haired twin" after the death of Margaret's mother.
An individual, named either Joseph or James Wilkerson, is identified in the 1810 United States Census for Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina, United States. He cannot be found in later records for that area, is therefore regarded as the most likely candidate to be Margaret Wilkerson Johnson's father.
