Biography

Sarah Wilkie was born 24 February 1763 ^[1][2][3] in either New Jersey^[2] or North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Wilkie and Elizabeth Jobs. In her sworn statement to the court during per widow's pension hearing on 25 May 1852, she stated that she was born on the 24th day of February 1763 in New Jersey or as she called it "The Jerseys".^[2] The 1850 U.S. Census lists her birth place as unknown.^[1] She was born at about the time her parents relocated from New Jersey to North Carolina. Thus, there is some uncertainty in regard to the true place of her nativity. However, she believed that she was born in New Jersey, so using that as her primary birth place for this profile.

Sarah was raised in Orange and Rowan Counties, North Carolina. Her father, William Wilkie wrote his last will and testament on 14 December 1802 in York, South Carolina, in which, he identified by name, his wife Elizabeth; sons: George and William; and six daughters: Sabra, Sarah, Deborah, Elizabeth, Rebeccah and Ann.^[4][5]

Sarah's first husband was Unknown Richardson. No other information is available for this marriage. It must have taken place between 1779 and 1785, most-likely in North Carolina. Mr. Richardson apparently died shortly thereafter and no children have been found resulting from this union.

According to Rowan County, North Carolina marriage bond, Sarah Richardson married Thomas Lowery sometime between 1780 and Dec 1786.^[6] Note, the date on the North Carolina marriage records for Rowan County, where she married Thomas Lowery, appear to be nearly illegible. Governor Richard Caswell was listed as the Governor on the marriage bond. He was the first Governor of North Carolina and served from 12 Nov 1776 - 20 Apr 1780 and served again as the 5th Governor from 13 May 1785 - 20 Dec 1787.^[7] In her sworn statement to the court during per widow's pension hearing on 25 May 1852, she stated that she was married to Thomas Lowery on 3 December 1786.^[2]

In the 1850 U.S. Census, Sarah Lowery was recorded as 87-years old living with her 59-year old son-in-law Dr. Issac Mullenax and 57-year old daughter Rachel Mullenex in Gilmer County, Georgia. Her birth place was listed as unknown.^[1]

On 25 May 1852, in Gilmer County, Georgia, Sarah Lowery appeared before the Justices of the Inferior Court and made the following declarations in order to obtain benefits associated for widows of the Soldiers of the Revolutionary War. ^[2][8]

• To the best of her belief and knowledge she was born on the 24th day of February 1763 and that she has now completed her eighty ninth year, that her birth as she believes took place in the State of New Jersey (or as it was then called (The Jerseys) the County not recollected) that when she was, a mere child her Father removed to Chatham County North Carolina, from thence she with her Father removed to Rowan County North Carolina in which last mentioned County and State."

• "Her husband the said Thomas Lowry had served as a Soldier in the Revolutionary war, a Private she believes, and he might have been possibly a non-commissioned or a commissioned officer."
• "Her husband the aforesaid Thomas Lowry died on the 17th day of December 1835."
• They "removed from Rowan County North Carolina to York District South Carolina lived there until March 1799 thence removed to Rutherford County North Carolina lived there one year, in March 1800 removed to Lincoln County North Carolina lived there forty-five years, in March 1845, removed to Gilmer County State of Georgia where she now lives and has lived ever since.."

Sarah died 31 August 1852 in Georgia ^[9] and was buried at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Talking Rock, Pickens County, Georgia.^[3]
