Biography

Ellis Williams was born Abt. 1621 in Marion, Pembrokeshire, Wales, and died possibly in 1691. He married Ellin Williams. She was born Abt. 1625 in Marion, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Sources indicate her maiden name was also Williams, a common Welsh surname.

Notes for ELLEN KLINCKEN: Ellen was the daughter of Arents Klincken, who came from Dalem, near Creyfelt, in Holland, to America in 1683, having known William Penn in Holland. He built the first two-story house ever raised in Germantown, Penn having been present and partaken of the raising-dinner. It stood near the southwest corner of Main and Tulpehocken Streets. Arents Klincken served several years as burgess of Germantown, but finally, in 1691, declined longer service for conscience' sake. He died at the age of eighty, leaving a son, Anthony, a noted hunter, who spent a long life in such exercises in the vicinity, and from whom the traditional name of Anthony has since been perpetuated in the Williams family.

NOTE by Chet SNOW : Another source says Ellis Williams died 19 April 1691 in Merion, Chester Co, PA. He is noted as emigrating to the Welsh Quaker colony between 1647 and 1655. ^[2]

This may be true but as Ellis' eldest son Robert is said to have married Gwen Cadwallader the SAME DAY also in Merion, PA, it may be a confusion.

GENEALOGICAL NOTE: As both Ellis Williams and his father used "Williams" as their surname (which was mandated for the gentry and for legal acts by the Act of Union of England & Wales in 1536), this profile uses "Williams" as Ellis' surname and adds "ap Hugh" as an internal name.^[3]
