Lydia Williams stated in her application for a widow's pension that her husband, Freeman Williams, was born in 1780 in 'Wait' County, North Carolina [Wake County?].
1832, Wake County, North Carolina -- Several deed books were destroyed in register's office fire. 1810 and 1820 U.S. Federal Census for Wake County are lost.
At the time Freeman enlisted in the Army, he was 30 years old and his occupation was farming. Lydia described Freeman as being six feet tall with dark hair, pale blue eyes, and a fair complexion. She said Freeman enlisted at Ashville, North Carolina and he served under Captain Gordon. No record for a Captain Gordon serving in that area could be found so the 1878 request for a pension was denied.[1]
Merged Freeman Williams profile, Williams-42758, listed him as John Freeman Williams. Documentation is needed to make sure of the correct name.
Freeman married Lydia Carroll in 1814 in Buncombe County, North Carolina.[2]Lydia couldn't remember the exact date, only the year. Freeman was enumerated as a head-of-house in 1830 Buncombe County, North Carolina. His birth family is unknown at this time (27 Mar 2017).
Buncombe County was formed in 1791 from parts of Burke County and Rutherford County...The large county originally extended to the Tennessee line...In 1808 the western part of Buncombe County became Haywood County. In 1833 parts of Burke County and Buncombe County were combined to form Yancey County.[3]

According to the widow's application of Freeman's wife, Lydia, they had lived in Buncombe County, North Carolina for about 22 years.[4]

Willis and William Carroll were enumerated next door to each other on page 259. William is a little older at from 30 to under 40. There was also a Daniel Carles on page 290.
The James Nelson Williams family was living next door at household 975.
Household 966 was the William Carroll family of NC. William's age was probably 53, but the '5' is poorly formed and could be an '8', but that's unlikely as his wife was 47. Teenage children and 70 year old Jane Plemons of Virginia was enumerated in their household. Perhaps William was Lydia (Carroll) Williams' brother.
Freeman is buried in Moreland, Winston County, Alabama, probably on the plot of land he owned as the cemetery is called Freeman Williams Cemetery. [14] This information was found in a book at the Double Springs court house in Winston County, Alabama about twenty years ago. The book said Freeman was the only known person buried there and FindaGrave agrees with this.
Note: Find a Grave Memorial 174235784 says his name is John Freeman Williams and DOB is 1780 and DOD is 8 Nov 1867.
Look under Williams to find the correct cemetery. Viewing the photo, it appears there are more graves marked there???
Freeman was part Native American, either Cherokee or Choctaw.
For general history of Buncombe County, North Carolina:
"Carol - I have been reading with interest your William Williams' families...in your research, did you ever come across a Freeman Williams b Buncombe Co, NC, as a possible family member of Wm Williams? Freeman was b about 1780 and married Lydia L Carroll. One of his sons was my gr-gr-grandfather, Adolphus D E Williams; his son, my gr-grandfather, was Adolphus Patton Williams; my grandmother was Lillian May Williams.
"In a story I read written by a relative, it said that this Williams family had relatives who lived in Giles Co, TN, but no names were given. During the Civil War, my Adolphus D E Williams and family moved from Winston Co, AL to Wayne Co, TN to wait out the war. Supposedly Wayne Co, TN was neutral territory. After the war they went back to Winston Co, then moved on to Saline Co, AR for a spell. Adolphus had been a Missionary Baptist Preacher and was much loved by those who came to hear him speak. No one in my family knew much about Freeman Williams except he may have been part Cherokee Indian. He owned land in Winston Co, AL, and died there in 1869. Would really like to find his parents. Thanks, Venée Stuart-Henson[15]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Freeman by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Freeman:
Freeman Williams was one of my ancestors. I'm very interested to try and find the Cherokee or Choctaw link.
John Freeman Williams 1780-1867 was born to Edward B Williams (09-11-1749 N. Carolina -?) and Dorcus (some time spelled Dorcas) Herring (1751 Johnston, North Carolina -1800 New Hanover, North Carolina) . I have been unable to find a marriage date.
There are 4 older children that are attached to Edward and Dorcus but I don't think their information is all correct.
John Jr b. 1770 North Carolina
William b. 1773 Wales
Elizabeth b. 1775 Wales
Elinor b. 1777 Wales
John "Freeman" b. 1780
Charles b. 1790
I do not have any further information on Edward but I do on Dorcus
Her parents were Benjamin Herring (1720-1789) and Mary Bright (1730-1786)
Please let me know if anything is wrong so I can correct my records.
