Biography

The 1851 census has Martha's birth year as 1776 and birth place as Therfield, but there is no matching record. The closest match is Martha Wilson baptised at Barkway, 3 miles E of Therfield, to Edward and Ann in Jan 1778 - Martha's third son was named Edward (after Samuel and John).

Alternately, there is a Martha Wilson to Joseph and Elizabeth at Barley, 2 miles East of Barkway on 24 Dec 1775. While this date meets the census age better, Barkways is closer to Therfield and she had no son called Joseph, while her eldest daughters were Mary and Jane. Joseph was the uncle of Edward (whose father and grandfather were also called Edward). A Martha Wilson of Barley married James Smith at Barkway 26/4/1812.
