Biography

Hamilton Wilson was born on 7 June, 1807 in North Carolina. His parents were possibly James Wilson Wilson-37690 and Hannah Bryan Wilson Bryan-3517, according to information given to me by a family member. However, I am detaching them from Hamilton's profile until there is concrete evidence. The information on James and Hannah mentioned here are for research purposes only.

Hamilton and Katherine Lee Ketner Ketner-183 were married on May 1, 1828. Joshua Wilson, Jr. Wilson-36020 was the bondsman. The marriage license bears the signature of three people: Hamilton, Robert Foster as witness and J. Wilson, Jr as bondsman. [1]

The following biographical note was written by Elbert Ezra Wilson Wilson-41298. Dwight Childers transcribed it for use on WikiTree. My thanks to both for their hard work.

"William Hamilton Wilson 1807 - 1870 Davidson County, NC"

"Hamilton Wilson took great pride in the orchard he had about the house with a variety of apples that would make Harry Bird envious. These were the Dan River, the magnobonum, pound pipkin, russet and a variety that was scarlet red all the way to the core; all of which varieties seem now extinct. There were pears, peaches, sugar cherries, black—heart cherries, merillo or sour cherries with damsons and blue plums all around the fringe of the fields. Another orchard he planted on Mexico Hill where after the Civil War he settled his younger son Lewis. This was mostly Dan River apples with a row of coppel along the Stage Road. Grandma Katherine was just as skilled with her garden as her husband with his trees, raising and kept a wide variety of peas, beans, sweet—corn, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, potatoes, with the ever present catnip and sage bushes by the garden gate, but she added tansy, rhue, featherfew, thyme, lavender, rosemary, sweet fennel, most of which garden commodities we moderns have never seen. Some have suggested that being of German stock the Ketners would have had hops for making beer. Perhaps that accounts for the wild hops on Indian Hill that are still such a pest."

Notes

NOTES

I have used research done by a distant cousin back in the sixties, but I am not comfortable with everything. The only sibling of Hamilton I feel confident of is John Washington Wilson. I will keep the others until I am more certain.

Who is Joshua Wilson who reports in census records to have been born in Maryland? What is his relation to Hamilton?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hamilton by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hamilton:

Did you notice in the 1840 census he is living next to William Hinshaw? Is this the same William Hinshaw credited with compiling the American Quaker volumes?
