RESEARCH

There appears to have been a family relationship between the Jolliff and Wilson families and the main thread connecting them is the use of the given names Abner and Jahoda through several generations. The first connection noted is between James Jolliff and Abner Wilson. Both men were approximately the same age and moved from New Jersey to Washington Co PA and then to Bourbon Co KY. [2] As far as family naming patterns go it should be noted James Jolliff and wife Elizabeth Norris had a son Abner Wilson Jolliff and a daughter Jahoda Jolliff. They also had a son Elijah Summers Jolliff, named for Elijah Summers an early Baptist minister deeply involved in the "Great Revival" movement at Cane Ridge in Bourbon County, Kentucky in August 1801. The minister Elijah Summers was also connected to the Wilson family because he married Mary Newkirk and Uriah Wilson in Clark Co KY 1796. Uriah and Abner Wilson are related (probably brothers) and lived in Washington Co PA where they served in the military (as did James Jolliff) during the Revolutionary War before coming to Fayette and Bourbon Co., KY. The name Jahoda is rare as well as unusual yet it was passed down in the Wilson and Jolliff families. Probable brothers of Abner and Uriah Wilson, Joseph Wilson as well as Moses Wilson named daughters Jahoda. All of these items seem to indicate there is a family connection between the Jolliff and Wilson families.

In addition, another book, demonstrates the repetition and usage of similar names continued for generations. Reference is made to Elder Abner Jollife (ba 1750 Greenbrier Co VA, a Baptist minister, probably a son of William and Phoebe Jolliffe. Elder Abner Jolliffe had sons Abner, Richard, James and Elijah and daughters Rachel, Elizabeth, and Jehoida, who married Enoch Holsclaw. These families moved to Kentucky and on to Illinois.[3]
