Biography

Thomas Wilson was born in Yorkshire, England.

Thomas was born in Masham about 1844. He was the son of Thomas Wilson and Hannah (Hudson) Wilson. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1851 he was living at 79 Silver Street, Masham with the family. His father was a brewers labourer and in the same Street was Robert Theakson and his family. Robert Theakston was the founder of the well known Brewery, Theakstons along with John Wood. It started at the Black Bull in Silver Street in 1827 and by 1832 Robert was the sole owner. In 1875 the business passed to son Thomas who then started to expand the Brewery. Thomas's father was likely working for Theaksons at that time. ^[3]

By 1861 Thomas was 16 and working as a farm servant in Thornton Steward. He was working for Farmer Anthony Trotter at Dantzic House Farm, which was neighbour to the Scrope family of Danby Hall. ^{[4] [5]}

On 19 September 1868, Thomas married Ellen (Hird) Pape at All Saints Church in Dewsbury. Thomas was described as an 'oil extractor' (the extraction of oil/lanolin from sheeps wool). Ellen was originally from Bedale, North Yorkshire and was the daughter of Thomas Pape and Ellen (Hird) Pape. They were both living at Batley Carr at that time . Thomas was a Labourer ^{[6] [7]}

In 1871 Thomas and Ellen were still living in the Dewsbury area in Soothill and Thomas was working as a 'Motor Grinder'. They also had a son Benjamin. ^[8]

At some point before 1881 the family moved back to North Yorkshire, to Firby in Bedale, Hauscar House. Thomas was now an 'Agricultural labourer', ^[9] but by 1891 they had returned to the West Riding and were living at 85, St James Street, Leeds, Thomas again working as a Labourer. ^[10] In 1901 they are at 21 Chesney Mount, Hunslet, Leeds , where they lived at least until after 1911, Thomas was a Motor Grinder. ^{[11] [12]}

Thomas died some time after 1911. I have been unable to trace GRO or burial record with any certainty.

Research Notes According to 1911 census Thomas and Ellen had 14 children, of which 8 died before 1911.
