Biography

John Winder was born in Yorkshire, England.

John was born in 1852. His parents were Thomas Winder and Mary Hargate.^[1] He was christened at All Saints Church, Darfield on 30 May 1852. ^[2][3]

At the time of the 1961 census he was living at the Masons Arms, Broomhill, Wombwell, Yorkshire. At home was John, with his parents Thomas and Mary, his sister Sarah Ann Winder (12), and his brothers [[Winder-444|William Winder (10) and [[Winder-448|Fred Winder (1). His father was working as a cordwainer as well as keeping the beer house. ^[4]

At the Masons Arms in 1871 were Thomas and Mary, with their children, Sarah Ann (22), William (21), a mason's labourer, John (19) a labourer in a coal mine, Fred (11) and another son Herbert Winder (9). Also with the family were John’s cousins Joseph Hargate and Lucy Ann Hargate.^[5] They were the children of his mother's brother John Hargate, who had been killed in an accident with a brewery dray in Sheffield in 1851.^[6]

On 30 December 1878 John married Pricilla Birks at Rotherham Parish Church. ^[7]

They settled in Broomhill, Wombwell and by 1881 census they had 2 children. Their daughter Mary Winder was born in 1880, and a son John Birch Winder was born in 1881. John was still working in the coal mines. ^[8]

In 1891 John and Pricilla’s family had grown. At 94 Broomhill, Wombwell, Yorkshire, were John and Pricilla and six children, Mary (11), John (10), Joe Winder (8), Florence Winder (6), Harry Winder (4), Fred Winder (3) and four week old Emma Winder. ^[9]

In 1901 at 94 Broomhill were John, still a coal miner, and his wife Pricilla with their children Joe (18), a coal miner, Florence (16), Harry (14), a pony driver at the coal mine, Fred (13), also a pony driver at the coal mine, Emma (10), Arthur Winder (9), and Herbert Winder (7). ^[10] Their daughter Mary had married Albert Palmer in 1900^[11] and their son John had married Clara Parker early in 1901,^[12]

On 18 October 1903 Pricilla died. She was 47 year old.^[13] She was buried in Wombwell Cemetery on 20 October 1903. ^[14]

In 1906, their son Joe married Gertrude Mallinson^[15] and early in 1911 Fred married Charlotte Parkinson.^[16]

In 1911 John was still in Broomhill. At home when the census was taken were daughters Florence (26) and Emma (20) an sons, Harry (24), a coal miner and Arthur (19). who was working on a farm.^[17]

He had several grandchildren, some who did not survive beyond childhood. Perhaps the most significant event concerning his grandchildren was the death of his daughter Mary’s son Horace Palmer who in 1913, at the age of 13 was killed in an accident at Mitchell Main Colliery, Wombwell.^[18]

John died in July 1923, age 71.^[19] and was buried on 31 July 1923 in Wombwell Cemetery.^[14] His will read 'This is the last will and Testament of me John Hargate Winder of 96 Broomhill, Wombwell in the County of York make this 4th day of July in the year of our Lord, One Thousand, Nine Hundred and 23. I hereby revoke all Wils heretofore made by me. I appoint Florence Winder of 96 Broomhill, Wombwell in the County of York to be the Executor of this my will. I direct that all my Debts, Funeral and Testamentary Expenses be paid as soon as conveniently may be after my decease. I give, divise, and bequeath unto Florence Winder my Daughter all I possess with the exception of my Watch for my son John Winder, my chain for my son in law Albert Palmer.'
