William Rondal Windle was born in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada on 29 Nov 1840 (by death certificate 1843 New York although 1900 US Census says Nov 1843 in Canada, and findagrave says 1840), the son of Charles Thomas "Thomas" Windle (1793 County Limerick, Ireland –before 1771 New Brunswick) and Mary MacLean (1804-1902) [although William's death certificate says George Windle and Mary A. McLain].

His middle name, Rondal, may be derived from his maternal uncle, Roland McLean, who left New Brunswick for Boston in 1846 and founded a furniture business there.

William married Lucy A. Black (b. 1850 (marriage certificate ref'd below) or b. 1852 (gravestone at findagrave) in England; d. 1888 presumably in Michigan and possibly related to birth of their youngest child Maud who was born in 1887)) on 16 Aug 1867 in Stronach, Manistee, Michigan.[1][2] Their children were:

  1. Selena Windle (1868-1869) - b. 6 Nov 1868 in Freesoil, Mason, Michigan.[3] Selena was named for her maternal grandmother.
  2. Mary Grace (Windle) Corry (1870-1941), married Andrew Corry
  3. Lucy Ann (Windle) Brown (1872-1955) - named for her mother, born 7 Apr 1872, married Arthur C. Brown 29 Aug 1891 Manistee, Michigan.[4]
  4. Robert C. Windle (1873/1874-1950), at age 19 married Mathilda Lapene on 23 June 1900 in Manistee, Michigan.[5]
  5. Emma (Windle) Tatreau Anderson (1877-1958 ), born Oct 1877 Richebucto, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada, married at age 16 to Eli Douglas Tatro on 8 Feb 1894.[6]
  6. Winnie Seabelle (Windle) Reddinger (1879-1980) - born 18 Sep 1879 in Michigan, married William Reddinger, and died Aug 1980 in Evansville, Indiana.[7]
  7. William Thomas Windle (1881-1980), married 19 Aug 1906 to Alma Bilodean in Manistee, Michigan.[8]
  8. Walter Windle (1883- ), born 31 May 1883 in Freesoil, Mason, Michigan.[9]
  9. James Daniel Windle (1884-1957), born 4 Aug 1884 in Freesoil, Mason, Michigan, died 1957 in Virginia.[10]
  10. Maud Ruth "Maude" (Windle) Neill (1887-1976)[11]

William Windle enlisted under the alias William McLean in May of 1864 in Buffalo, NY and was assigned to the 13th New York Heavy Artillery. He was sent to Elmira, NY and then to Hart's Island, NY and was transferred to the U.S. Navy on June 7th 1864. He was stationed on the USS North Carolina from June 7 to June 13 then transferred to the USS Shamrock and was discharged from service on 16 August 1865[12] His great-grandson, James Coby Neill, reports inheriting his civil war sword that has 1862 stamped on it and his great-granddaughter, Stuart Windle Webster, inherited his corking tools used to repair his ship while in service and are still in her possession.

In the 1900 US Census "Wendel William Cory" is age 57, born Nov 1843, immigrated to US in 1862 from Canada, a laborer with parents born in Ireland. His name is misattributed as Cory as he and his youngest child Maud are living with his oldest Mary (Windle) Cory and her husband Andrew Cory in Manistee.

William, occupation Drayman, passed away at age 61 on 28 Oct 1904 in Manistee, Michigan[13] when he "was kicked by his horse while he was unharnessing the animal. In falling his head struck a timber and his neck was broken."[14] William was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee.[15]
