Biography

Birth

Reuben Wing was born in 1771, at Harwich, Massachusetts, the son of Samuel Wing and Hannah (Sears) Wing.[1][2]

Residence

Reuben Wing came with his parents to Winthrop, Maine, in 1774,[2] and then as a teeanager moved to Livermore, Maine, (both towns were then in Massachusetts), where he lived for the rest of his long life. The 2010 Livermore history says he was there as early as 1785, and settled in the area known as "Tollawalla," on the east side of the Androscoggin River, and that he established and kept the first ferry in the town.[3] The 1928 history says he did not come to Livermore until 1790,[2] but he was listed among the 17 heads of families at Livermore in 1789,[4] and at the first town meeting in 1795, he was chosen as one of the surveyors of roads.[5] The 1790 census shows him living alone in Livermore.[6]

Marriages

  1. Reuben Wing married Hannah Smith.[1] They were first cousins, both grandchildren of Elnathan Wing and Hannah (Allen) Wing. An unsourced Ancestry profile gives the marriage date as 7 Jan 1792 and says that they were married at Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts).[9] (The earliest marriage records in the FHL film of the Livermore vital records date from 1797.) Their first child was born at Livermore on 4 Jul 1792.[10]
  2. On 10 Sep 1810, the town clerk of Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts), certified "that an intention of marriage between Mr. Reuben Wing and Miss Lucy Welde both of Livermore hath been entered with me fourteen days prior to the Date hearof [sic] and hath been published in Livermore as the Law Directs."[11]. They married there two days later.[12] Their first known child was Walter Weld Wing, born (from the age at death in his death record on 5 Sep 1811.[13]

Death

Reuben Wing died in 1862 at Livermore, Maine.[1] A modern memorial marks the site of his burial at the North Livermore Cemetery.[14]

Research Notes

  • In the FHL film of the vital records of Livermore, Maine, the children of Reuben Wing and his first wife, Hannah, appear on page 51 (image 54) of the first volume, "Livermore Vital Records, 1786-1840." But the film shows that the records of another family have apparently been pasted over the Wings' record, and only their first two children (Polly and Allen) and visible. There is clearly at least one more entry, but it is mostly obscured. A later copy of the family's births appears in the second volume on the FHL film, "Livermore Vital Records, 1762-1810," at image 279 with children through 1797.
  • An unsourced Ancestry profile gives Reuben and Hannah two more children, born in 1798 and 1799,[9] but these do not appear in the records in either place on the FHL film. A 1920 publication says that Walter Weld Wing, born about 1811, was Reuben's eighth child,[15] but only five older children are listed in the FHL film's records.
  • Walter Wing does not appear on the list of Reuben and Lucy's children shown on their gravestone.[14] It may be that the list includes only children buried with their parents at the North Livermore Cemetery and that Walter was buried elsewhere.

  • The Reuben Wing of this profile should not be confused with another resident of Livermore, Maine, also named Reuben Wing (1745-1835), who lived briefly at Livermore in the 1780s or 1790s. The two men were not related. (Bloom-1124 12:17, 10 October 2019 (UTC))
