Terri's Notes -

Joseph Henderson Winn family history - personal recollections audio tape of Audrey Winn Holm. "Papa had a brother named "Nate" that ran away from home with him when their mother died."
Joseph was about 12 and Nate was 10 years old at the time.
It is told that they found their way to Puryear, Henry, Tennessee where they worked in at the farm of William (Billie) and Tennessee Seaton. Per audio recording from Audrey Winn - "for a time Joseph (and family) moved to Oklahoma to "get rich" mining." Joseph shortly returned to Henry Tennessee and Nathan moved on.

Married Sarah Ann [Petite] Trout abt 1881 - she had several children already.

Terri's Note - I found the following article (Kiowa County Prospectors) regarding mining activity in Oklahoma. This is what my grandma could have been referring to when she told us the following tale about living for a short time in Oklahoma. - My Grandmother was the daughter of Joseph Hendersen Winn - Nate's brother. - Notice that Nate is listed in the 1910 census for Kiowa County Oklahoma.

From a recording from Audrey Winn:
"My father opened up clay pits up there by Foundry Hill[Paris, Henry, Tennessee] . He hired men to dig that clay out and haul it to where ever he sold it. He had that business going for him. He was interested in mining, that's why we went to Oklahoma. We moved to Oklahoma for a short time when I was a baby [my note - Audrey was born 16 Jan 1901], but we had to live in a tent and didn't stay there long. We were in Indian territory and lived in a tent. Mama said that papa liked to play cards and gamble. She said he would go out and leave her there with the kids. She didn't want to tell him not to. Those wild animals like coyotes would just scratch around that camp She said she was never so scared in all of her life. She just couldn't stand it. If she could of stood it we could have been rich today...."

http://rebelcherokee.labdiva.com/kcgold.html Kiowa County Prospectors: It is generally conceded by historians that gold legends of this county were responsible for the influx of herd-rock miners who moved into the Wichitas around Cold Springs and started the Wildman era of gold mining prior to the time this country was opened to settlement. Gold hunters sneaking into the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache lands kept the army from Fort Sill busy chasing them out again. But, the lure of wealth kept them coming. "
