James Meriwether Winston was born in about 1801 in Virginia (his tombstone lists 1801 but it should be noted that a couple records list 1805-1806). There is also some conflict regarding his parents. The only official source (so far) that lists his parents is a marriage record (for his second marriage to Judith) and in that record James M. Winston and Sarah A. Hobson are listed and not the parents listed here.[1] However, another record for the same marriage lists his parents as William B. and Ann Winston (which corresponds with what is listed here.)[2] Without other supporting documentation it is unclear which record is correct; but it should also be noted that the parents listed for Judith differ between the two records as well.
James married Mary Ann Hemingway on December 9, 1826 in Richmond, Henrico, Virginia. The couple can be found together on the following census reports:
It is believed that this couple had ten or eleven children (eight are linked on find-a-grave) before Mary Ann passed away on September 13th of 1862 at the age of 56.[6] On February 3, 1864 (or March 3, 1864) he was remarried to Judith E. Mann.[7] James is listed with Judith on both: the 1870 Census[8] and the 1880 Census[9] in Brookland, Henrico, Virginia. James passed away in June of 1886 and is buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia.[10]
