Johann Lienhardt Winter was born 03 October 1855 in Shcherbakovka, Saratov, Russia to parents Georg Jacob Winter and Eva Maria Seifert.
Shcherbakovka was founded as a Lutheran colony on 15 June 1765. The first German colonists came from the areas of Durlach, Württemberg, and Darmstadt in Germany. It was named in honor of Michael Shcherbatov, a Russian noble and well-known writer during the time of Catherine the Great.
Today, the former colony of Shcherbakovka is known as Shcherbatovka. Other names for this colony include:
Tscherbakovka, (Shcherbatovka), (Shcherbakovka), Volgograd, Russia
Shcherbakovka, Saratov, Volga, Russia
LEONHART WINTER was of German descent, his family having lived in Central Germany. Many people along the Rhine accepted an offer from Catherine II of Russia that would give grants and freedom from military service in return for the introduction of improved agricultural techniques, to be used in the production of wheat on the banks of the Distant Volga. CZAR ALEXANDER II in 1871 declared CATHERINE's guarantee to the settlers ended. He wanted the German Farmers in his army. LEONHART WINTER was drafted into the Russian Army at the age of 21 in1876.
His experience was quite extraordinary. He was athletic and agile and outstanding in the games the soldiers would play. Czar Nicholas ll selected him as his body guard at the palaces, THE SUMMER PALACE, THE TSARKOE-SELO, and THE HERMITAGE, which later became one of the leading art galleries in the world. After being in the army for 3 1/2 years, LEONHART was stationed at the palaces for about 6 months as a body guard. He became ill, with what they thought was tuberculosis. It was decided to send him to ODESSA then to ROMANIA were he recovered, and finally returned to the palaces.
Leonhart married Eva Elisabeth Steinert about 1882 and the couple had 6 children. Eva died shortly after the birth of sixth child David Winter in 1894. David died just days later. He married Katherine Kuxhaus Korb later that year. Her husband, Johann Georg Korb, died the previous year in 1893.
In 1900, his now friend, Czar Nicholas ll, told him that things were unsettled and he should take his family to the USA soon. Leonhart took his friend's advice and immigrated to the United States with his family, which included some of the Korb children, his children from first wife Eva, and his children with Katherine Kuxhaus Korb.
My mother told me that she remembered as a young girl her grandpa Leonhart had a beautiful photo of Czar Nicholas ll and his family hanging on a wall.Several years before World War 2 started, and shortly before her grandpa Leonhart died, she said that beautiful photo disappeared.
The George Oblander family and Leonhart and Katharina Winter were friends in Shcherbakovka (also known as Deutsch Tscherbakowka and Muehlberg. The families traveled together to the United States of America. Each of these people in these couples have WikiTree profiles:
