All that is known about Peter Wolfinbarger's Revolutionary War service is contained in his application for a pension (declaration), which was rejected (#R11770), dated August 24, 1832, Knox County, Tennessee.
A portion of that document appears below (verbatim):
". . . He lived in Shenandoah County, Virginia at which place he was drafted as a private for three months of the year not recollected, but he thinks it was in the month of August he hired a substitute to serve said time by the name of Martin Miller under Captain George Rinker in Colonel Abraham Bird's Regiment said Miller served out the full term of three months for which brought me an honorable discharge which was signed by Colonel Bird which is lost.
Again while living at the same place in the fall of the year, but year not recollected he was drafted for three months under Captain Henry Daring in Colonel Abraham Bird's Regiment of Virginia Militia and he hired a substitute to serve said tour by the name of Henry Fetzer who served out his full term of three months and brought me an honorable discharged signed by the said Colonel Bird and is lost.
Again while living at the same place in the first of Sept. 1781 he was drafted to serve a three months tour against the British under Captain Darby Downey in Colonel John Tipton's Regiment.
We rendezvoused at Millerstown at the Courthouse of said Shenandoah County, marched to Fredericks Burgh thence towards Richmond. We were met by an express and informed that Cornwallace was taken. We were then honorably discharged for a three month's tour but we did not serve that length of time.
The true date of the discharge not recollected. The discharge was signed by Colonel Tipton, but is lost.
He has no documentary evidence and he knows of persons whose evidence he can procure who can testify to his service. . . ."

Biography:
1. Peter was likely born in Shenandoah, VA. He married twice. Peter and his first wife Susannah Miller moved with two of Peter's brothers to Greenbrier County, VA, now WV, where Peter's older children were born. Subsequently, Peter moved from Greenbrier, he appears in Grainger County, TN, Lee County, VA, and Knox County, TN court records after 1800. He married his second wife Milly Hanson in 1807 soon after the death of his first wife. These property transfers are taken from deed book records: July 28, 1806 Thomas Hurst of Claiborne County and state of Tennessee conveyed two tracts of land lying in Lee County and State of Virginia on the south side of Powell River crossing Big Kentucky and Little Kentucky branches to Peter Wolfenbarger of Lee County for $600. Deed Book 3, p22-2, April 1813. Peter Wolfenbarger and Milly his wife of the County of Grainger and State of Tennessee conveyed the two above mentioned tracts, 95 acres and 25 acres lying on the south side of Powell River to Stephen Thompson of Lee County and State of Virginia for $600. Peter Wolfenbarger probably stayed in Grainger County for several years. He later moved to Knox County, Tennessee, where he purchased land on Christmas Eve 1822. December 24, 1822 Peter Wolfenbarger purchased thirty nine acres of land lying on Beaver Creek in Knox County from Samuel Bell Sr. for one hundred fifty-nine dollars. Recorded June 7, 1825.
2. Peter served in the Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War. However, he did not qualify for a pension since his time of service was less than six months. His son, Peter Amos, was a drummer boy in the War of 1812. Their tombstones are adjoining, and inscriptions thereon confirm their respective service in the military.
3. He was a private in the U.S. Revolutionary War.
4. He applied for a pension, but was rejected because he did not serve in the army for the required length of time.
