"(The following information was taken from a copyrighted article in the October 12, 1987 issue of the West Virginia Advocate, published in Capon Bridge, West Virginia) John Wolford was a Revolutionary War veteran who was born in Washington County, Maryland, on August 11, 1763, and died in Novermber 1849 in Hampshire County, per his Will and probate. According to a Bible record, his wife, Catherine Lidener was born on February 8, 1764. (Note: Washington County, was not established until 1776, when it was formed from Frederick County, Maryland.) Wolford settled in the Hoy section of Hampshire County during the 1790s. This is located on the west side of North River, between U.S. Route 50 and State Route 45. His farm was located just north of the intersection of Hoy Road and Hickory Corner Road. A family graveyard is located on his former farm. In 1845, John Wolford, of Hampshire County, Virginia, applied for a pension for services performed in the Revolutionary War. The complete record of his application is on microfilm in the National Archives, on Microfilm Roll # 2624. It shows his claim to have made two enlistments, the first as an inductee, and the second as a volunteer. The children of John and Catherine (Lidener) Wolford were: 1. HENRY WOLFORD was born on October 20, 1789, probably in Washington County, Maryland. His first wife was Elizabeth KIDWELL, daughter of John and Ellen (Hayes) Kidwell. Elizabeth was born on July 21, 1791, and died after giving birth to three children, probably during the early l820s. The children of Henry and Elizabeth (Kidwell) Wolford were: (a) George Wolford (1815-1898) married Nancy Loy, daughter of Adam and Sarah (Hiett) Loy, of Sandy Ridge. George and Nancy emigrated from Hampshire County in 1876 and they died in Peoria, Illinois. George was a Union sympathizer during the War Between the States. (b) Lucinda Wolford married John Steward. He was a leader in a literary society called The Fairview Lyceum, operated from a school building in the Gore District of Hampshire County. See pages 80-83 in Capon Valley: Its Pioneers and Their Descendants, Volume II, by Maud Pugh, which gives a history of that literary society. (c) John Wolford was the third child born during Henry Wolford's first marriage. After Henry Wolford's first wife died, he remarried to Margaret RHINEHART, daughter of Abraham and Rachel (Ward) Rhinehart. Margaret was born on February 26, 1787 and died on August 26, 1854, of diphtheria, in Hampshire County. The 1850 census for Hampshire County showed these persons in Henry's household: (a) Josiah Wolford was born in 1826 and died on July 8, 1874, (b) James Wolford was born in 1828, and (c) Elizabeth Wolford was born in 1822. 2. ADAM WOLFORD, born during the 1790s, was named in his father's Will, in 1849. Adam was not listed on the 1850 census for Hampshire County, and I think that he had migrated west. 3. MARTIN WOLFORD was born circa 1794 and died on May 17, 1872, according to a death record in the Hampshire County Courthouse. He married Rosannah CRIM, in 1815, in Berkeley County, Virginia. His Will, filed on March 4, 1872, specified that he be buried in the Malick cemetery, near Augusta, West Virginia. I have not been able to locate his grave, which suggests that a tombstone was not erected. He named these children in his Will: (a) Mary Wolford married Peter Snyder (b) Adam Wolford (c) Peter Wolford (d) John J. Wolford (e) William Wolford (f) Richard M. Wolford, and (g) Henry Wolford. 4. ROSANNAH WOLFORD married George CRIM. They were on the 1820 census for Hampshire County, and she was probably born during the 1790s. It is believed that they spent some time in Berkeley and Loudoun Counties, Virginia. 5. ELIZABETH WOLFORD was born circa 1797, and died unmarried. She lived on part of her father's homeplace, at Hoy, West Virginia. 6. JOHN WOLFORD, II, was born on March 4, 1799 and died on November 16, 1875, at Fairmont, West Virginia. He married Catherine Shroads in Frederick County, Virginia, on July 23, 1825. Catherine was born on November 14, 1804 and died on June 18, 1864. They lived in Hampshire County for more than a decade, before moving to Harrison County, West Virginia. According to a Bible record, seven children were born to this union: Jane Ann, John Henry, Adam Sidner, Mary Ellen, Delilah Catherine, Isabelle Reading, and James Richard Wolford. Descendants still live in Harrison and Marion Counties. 7. JACOB WOLFORD was born on March 6, 1800 and died in Hampshire County on July 10, 1874. Jacob, who married Catherine GRAPES, lived in the Hoy section of Hampshire County. The 1850 census listed these persons, and their ages, in Jacob's household: (a) Samuel Wolford, age 27 years, (b) Elijah Wolford, age 25 years, (c) Harriett Wolford, age 25 years, (d) Daniel Wolford, age 21 years, (e) Azariah Wolford, age 19 years, (f) John W. Wolford, age 17 years, (g) George Wolford, 15 years, (h) Debra Wolford, age 13 years, (i) Jonathan Wolford, age 11 years, and (j) Francis Wolford, age 4 years. It is believed that Jacob was buried in the Wolford graveyard on the homeplace, in one of the unmarked graves. 8. PHOEBE WOLFORD was born on June 24, 1802, and died unmarried, on the old homeplace. It is believed that she was buried in one of the unmarked graves in the Wolford graveyard. 9. ISABELLA WOLFORD was born on April 10, 1805 and died on January 4, 1870, in Hampshire County. She married William BENNETT (1805-1841), on October 24, 1827. Information on Isabella's family was derived from a pamphlet written by Mr. Oscar L. Bennett, Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. It consists of names and vital dates of their descendants, without biographical or historical information. 10. ANN WOLFORD was born in 1807 and died unmarried. She lived on the Wolford old homeplace. 11. SUSANNAH WOLFORD was born in 1808. Her husband, Moses MCKNIGHT, was not living with her in 1849. In fact, John Wolford's Will forbade Moses McKnight from receiving any benefit from his estate. On the 1850 census for Hampshire County, three children were living in the household of Susan McKnight: Martha McKnight was 16 years old; Rosannah McKnight was 14 years old, and; Phebe McKnight was 11 years old. (Note) To eliminate possible confusion for those doing research in the early tax records of Hampshire County, there was another John Wolford who lived in the county. According to his own testimony, the other John Wolford was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1754. He was living in Sussex County, New Jersey when he became a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He settled in Hampshire County several years after the war, in the l780s, and lived here for about seventeen years. Then he moved to a remote area in Randolph County, Virginia, on the Dry Fork of the Cheat River, where he received a Revolutionary War pension in 1833.
