Harold Wolters

Born: April 29th, 1894

Died: June 13th, 1969

Harold Wolters, widely known Portis citizen, died in Smith County Memorial hospital last Friday. He seemed to be on the way to recovery from a heart attack when he was stricken again last Thursday. Memorial services were held from the First Brethren Church in Portis, Monday, June 16th, with the Revs. George Cone and Clarence Lackey officiating. Mrs. Wendel Cram was soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Dan Brumbaugh. Internment was in Fair View cemetery with Lowell Wolters, Darrell Wolters, Roger Palmer, Gerald Wolters, Gene Bihlmaier and Kenneth Gentzler as pall bearers. Obituary: George Harold Wolters, son of G.J. and Kathryn DeBey Wolters, was born north of Portis, Kansas April 29th, 1894 and departed this life at the Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, Kansas, June 13, 1969 at the age of 75 years, 1 month, and 15 days. Harold has lived around Portis all his life. In April 1918 he was united in marriage to Ruby Herron and to this union were born two children. Ruby preceded him in death in 1933. In 1936 he was united in marriage to Zona Palmer and to this union were born five children. He confessed his faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized and was taken into membership of First Brethren church in 1918 and this church he attended at the present time. Harold was an energetic farmer and stockman. He bought mules for many years and liked the outdoors and hunting. He was a loving husband, father and grand father and cared much for the welfare of his family. Preceding him in death were one infant daughter Joan, May 1945, and one grandson, Robert Palmer, July 1958. Surviving are his wife, Zona; six children, Laverle, Wanda Palmer and John, all of Portis; Joleen Roadhouse, Osborne; Janice Anderson, and James all of Portis; thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers, Martin and John, and two sisters, Helena Gentzler and Amanda Lemon preceded him. Two sisters and two brothers also survive: Cinda Rube, Portis, Rita Bilhmaier, Garden City and Russell and Lester Wolters, Portis. These, with more distant relatives and many friends will miss him.
