Biography

Thomas Wombwell was born about 1600 in England. His parents are at this time unknown.

Immigration to Virginia Colony

Unsourced information on Ancestry.com tells us that In 1638 Thomas sailed on a ship owned by James City County, Virginia Colony, commanded by Christopher Lawson. The name of the ship is unknown and this statement is unconfirmed. It is known that Thomas was in James City County by May 1638. (Strutton-11 17:27, 5 March 2023 (UTC))

On December 25, 1638 Thomas received a patent from James City County for 650 acres of land. This patent was recorded in 1642.

Near the head of Checheroes Cr. in Chichahominy River, N. upon Richard Bell, haveing a landing place & passage way bet. sd. Marriage & Children

Thomas Wombwell married Unknown probably about 1640-1645 in either James City County or Isle of Wight County, Virginia. No records have been found giving the name of his wife, date or place of marriage. Thomas is known to have had one son, Thomas Wombwell, Jr., who was given title to his father's land in Isle of Wight County on 2 September 1664.[2]

Career

Although it is unclear why Thomas Wombwell would be called "Captain," he is referred to as Capt. Wombnell [Wombwell] in a land transaction, Isle of Wight Co., 6 June 1656.[1]

Thomas Wombwell became the third clerk of the county of Isle of Wight from 1645 to 1656.[3]

Death

Thomas Wombwell appears to have died about 1664. No will has yet been located. Disposition of his estate may be in this entry:

Land taken up by Capt. George Hardy and Capt. Thomas Wombell was sold to John Groves, said Groves, for love, etc., gives Thomas Wombwell, Jr., all title to said land 2 Sept., 1664.[2]

Research Notes

Incorrect parents: This profile previously had William Wombwell attached as a father. This is incorrect. This William had a son Thomas, however, he was a fellow at St. John's College, Cambridge, became Vicar of Wath and died unmarried. He was buried on 28 October 1661 at Darfield.[4]
