Alfred John Woodroffe was born on 23 April 1843 in Costock, Nottinghamshire, England to Solomon William Woodroffe and Sophia Woodroffe. He was christened on 27 April 1843 in Costock, Nottinghamshire.[1]
In 1851, Alfred lived in Costock with his parents and siblings. He was described as a "farmer's son scholar".[2]
In 1861, aged 17, he was still living with his family and apprenticed as a lace manufacturer.[3]
Alfred immigrated to the Colony of Queensland, later to become a state of Australia in 1901.
They lived at "Homewood" in Lambert St, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. The original house was moved in recent years to make way for high-rise development but was still in the local area being utilised as an office for a real estate company.
In 1935, Alfred celebrated his ninety-second birthday and it was reported in the local newspaper:
Mr. Alfred John Woodroffe, who celebrated his 92nd birthday yesterday, has been a resident of Queensland for over 71 years, and has resided at
Kangaroo Point for the last 67 years. Mr. Woodroffe was an officer of the Customs Department for 45 years until he reached the compulsory
retiring age. Since then he has followed his hobbies, fishing and gardening, and is still hale and hearty. He has a grown-up family of eight, all of whom are married.[5]
Alfred Woodroffe died on 13 January 1938 at the age of 95 in Brisbane, Queensland.[6] He was buried at Dutton Park/ South Brisbane Cemetery.[7][8][9]
