[1] John Woodson has been generally accepted as the son of John and Sarah Woodson.
He was born about the year 1632 at Fleur de Hundred or, as it was sometimes called, Piersey's Hundred, a plantation on the south side of James River, in what is now Prince George county, Virginia. With the exception of his remarkable preservation from the Indians during the massacre on the I8th of April, 1644, nothing is known of him until 1679 when [2]he is enumerated among the "tithables" at Curies, a plantation on the north side of James River, above the Fleur de Hundred. It is interesting to note that, while the brothers, John and Robert, had not been identified as Mister in the tithables of 1679, they were so identified in their land patents.
None of the Woodson men of that time were literate; however, they were substantial citizens and respected planters. He was further listed as one of forty men who were ordered by the court to "fitt out men horse and arms" according to the Act of the Assembly. He was credited with three tithables and John Woodson, Jr., his son, was credited
John was married probably about 1654 but the name of his wife has not been handed down. In his will he mentions his wife, and two sons, John, and Robert 'who hath labored for himself three years.' He mentions also son Robert's two children, Jane and Samuel; and brother Robert's five sons, John, Robert, Richard, Joseph and Benjamin, designating the eldest as cousin John Woodson, meaning nephew, as was the custom.[3]
John Woodson is listed as head of household and Sarah Woodson is listed as his wife in the muster for Peirseys hundred (Jan. 1, 1624/1625). The same muster also gives their ship (the George) and their date of arrival (1619). No children are listed.
