Biography

Elisabeth Woodward, the daughter of Ezekiel Woodward and Elisabeth (Davis) Woodward, was born Feb. 1, 1723-4 in Gloucester, Massachusetts Bay Colony..[1][2]

Elisabeth Woodward first married Philemon Warner, Jr. on 27 December 1748 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[3][4] Philemon Warner jr., and Elisabeth Woodward had the following children, all in Gloucester:

  1. Philemon, son of Philemon, jr. and Elisabeth (Woodward). Sept. 10, 1749.[5]
  2. Elizabeth, Apr. 17, 1751.[6]
  3. Mary Warner, the daughter of Philemon, jr. and Elisabeth (Woodward), was born Feb. 5, 1753.[7]
  4. Ezekiel, Feb. 11, 1755.[8] Ezekiel, the son of Philemon, jr. and Elisabeth (Woodward) died Oct. 18, 1758. [9]
  5. Abigail, Apr. 8, 1757.[10]
  6. Susanna, d. Philemon, jr. and Elisabeth, Apr. 17, 1759.[11]
  7. Sarah, d. Philemon, jr. and Elisabeth (Woodward), Jan. 28, 1761.[12] Sarah, the daughter of Philemon, jr. and Elisabeth (Woodward) died June 22, 1761.[13]
  8. Ezekiel, May 20, 1762..[14]
  9. William, s. Philemon, jr. and Elisabeth, Mar. 8, 1766.[15]

Her first husband, Philemon Warner, jr. died June 4, 1766 in his 39th year in the First Parish of Gloucester.[16] His probate case started in 1766, and final distribution was settled in 1790. The probate records confirm that Elizabeth, the daughter of Philemon and Elizabeth, died underage and unmarried, and that Elizabeth, the widow of Philemon, married Nathaniel Harraden.[17]

Elisabeth remarried. Elisabeth Woodward Warner and Nathaniel Haraden, of Newburyport, announced intent to marry Feb. 8, 1772.[18] We find in the Newburyport records that Nathaniel Harriden (Haraden), of Gloucester, and the widow Elisabeth Warner, announced their intent to marry Feb. 7, 1772. [19][20] Children from this union included:

  1. Philemon Warner Harridan (Haraden), the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth, was baptized Feb Apr. 18, 1773 in the Third Parish, at Annisquam, Gloucester.[21]
  2. Jonathan Haradan (Haraden), the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth, was baptized Feb. 5, 1775 in the Third Parish, at Annisquam, Gloucester.[22]

Background

The Woodard Family from the Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines provides further insight on her marriages.[23]

Her parents, Ezekiel Woodward, and Elizabeth (Davis) Woodward married on Nov. 30, 1720.[24]

Her mother, Elizabeth Davis Woodward was born on 11 Jan 1701 in Essex, England and died 1 Oct 1766 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. She lies buried in the First Parish Burial Ground Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts,.[25]

Her father, Deacon Ezekiel Woodward was born in 1697 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts and died 4 Sep 1771 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. He lies buried in the First Parish Burial Ground Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts.[26]

John Babson discusses the early Woodwards in Gloucester[27]:

"Ezekiel Woodward has the birth of a child recorded here in 1702; but did not become a landholder till 1707, when he bought a messuage (a dwelling house with outbuildings and land assigned to its use) and 100 acres of land, at Little River, of Jacob Davis. Though there were several persons of the name of Woodward, early residents in Massachusetts, it is reasonable to suppose that this Ezekiel was the son of Ezekiel who bought a house and lot in Ipswich in 1661, and who had a son of the same name born there in 1666. Ezekiel of Gloucester had several children by his wife Hannah, who died Feb. 2, 1719, aged forty-eight. He next married Mary Davis, April 15, 1719; who died, Nov.1, 1721, of small-pox, aged fifty-three. It appears that he was thrice married after the death of the last-named wife: to Rachel Haskell, June 22, 1722; to Anna Low of Ipswich, April 13, 1732; and to the Widow Rebekah Bennet, Nov. 24, 1740. He died Jan. 16, 1743. His sons Ezekiel and Beamsley married in town; the former to Elizabeth Davis, November 30, 1720. He settled at the Harbor about 1738, and carried on the fishing business. He was a deacon of the First Church several years, and otherwise a prominent citizen. He was living 1761. He had nine children; of whom Ezekiel, the oldest son, married Abigail Sanders, and had several children. She became a widow before 1770, when she married Rev. John Rogers. Moses and Davis, two other sons of Deacon Woodward, married, and removed from town."

Research Notes

Thoughts to resolve a comment:

"In looking over this branch, it seems that Nathaniel and Elizabeth Woodward Warner's children : Philemon Warner Haradan (Haradan-5) and Jonathan Haradan (1775-1857) (Haradan-2) have been assigned to Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth, who died 1 Sep 1770. Let me know if you agree. Thanks, Kathy"

Elizabeth Warner, the daughter of Philemon, Warner jr. and Elisabeth (Woodward) Warner, was born April 17, 1751 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.[28]

Per Dawes-Gates,:

  • "an Elizabeth dau. of the above is said to have d. at Newburyport Sept. 17, 1770, ae. 12 yr.6 mo. which would suggest death of this girl and also of a younger Elizabeth".
  • "There is still extant a letter written by Elizabeth Woodward Warner Harraden to her daughter Mary Warner Parker after the migration of the Parker family to the west in the Fall of 1788"
