Biography

The evidence for Nathaniel's parentage is a Smithfield, Rhode Island deed (3:488) dated 5 Dec 1754 (Nathaniel had just signed the freeman oath that year, hence had presumably turned 21, hence was born about 1733), abstracted as follows: "Thomas Woodward of Smithfield, yeoman, sells for 600 pounds to my son Nathaniel Woodward, land in Smithfield, 30 acres, bounded by Woolf Swamp, Mr. John Owenes, and my own land; and one room in my now dwelling house." [signs; no wife] Witnesses Wm Olney, blacksmith, Ezekiel Woodward Junior [not a son].

He married at Smithfield, Mary Brittain, on 7 Feb 1759.[1][2] In 1777, he was enumerated in the Military census in Smithfield, as aged 16-50 and unable to bear arms.[3] He sold land in Smithfield in March 1779, and perhaps died there by 1782, as his widow arrived without him in Danville, Vermont, by 1782.[4]

Marriage

Recorded in Smithfield:
" Woodward Nathaniel and Mary Brittain, by Daniel Mowry, Justice, 7 Feb 1759."[5][6]

Land

Dated 11 March 1779:

"Nathaniel Woodward of Smithfield, yeoman, sells to Ezekiel Angell for £526, land and a dwelling house, bounded by the land of Stephen Woodward [Nathaniel's brother], Christopher Whipple, James Angell. Wife Mary x [mark] Nathaniel x [mark] Witnesses Isaac Brayton, John Dexter, Eber Angell."[7]

Death

Perhaps at Smithfield between 1779 and 1782, however no death or cemetery record appears to be extant.

He was enumerated in the 1777 military census in Smithfield, RI, sold land there in 1779, and his wife was said to be a widow upon her arrival in Vermont in 1782.[8][9]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:
