Biography

SAMUEL TENNEY, born in Bradford, Mass. (now Groveland), 17 December, 1697, son of Elder Samuel and Sarah (Boynton) Tenney; married in Bradford 5 January, 1719-20, Sarah Worcester, daughter of William Worcester 1661 – 1706 and Martha Cheney 1673 – 1729 of Bradford. Mrs. Sarah Tenney was born II Feb., 1697-8. and died 24 May 1749 in Littleton. They united in the First Church 24 April, 1720 (Church Manual.)

He sold to his brother, Daniel Tenney for 17lbs,, five acres in the Bailey meadow in Bradford, which he bought of Ebenezer Burbank in partnership with brother John Tenney; date, i November, 1726. Witnesses, Samuel Tenney, Senior, and Philip Tenney. (Essex Deeds, 49: 262.)

" Samuel Tenney and Caleb Hopkinson, of full age, depose that they and several others were chosen by East precinct of Bradford to dispose of some land belonging to Bradford in 1727, etc. Sworn to 27 November, 1728." (Essex Deeds, 50: 258.)

He removed to Littleton, Mass., about 1727-8, where Mrs. Tenney died.

He married in Bradford, 28 December, 1749, a second wife, Elizabeth Fales of Bradford, " daughter of ye widow." She united with the First Church 2 November, 1746. He and his wife Elizabeth of Littleton sold Thomas Cross of Haverhill, Mass., land in Bradford. Dated 12 January, 1749. (Essex Deeds, 99: 218.) He died in 1777. The first three children were born in Bradford ; the others were born at Littleton, eleven children, it is said.

Inscription: Here Lies ye body of / Mr Samuel Tenny / who departed this / Life April ye 30 1776 / Aged 78 years 5 / months & 3 Days Calculated birth is Saturday, November 27, 1697 Julian i.e. they didn't adjust for the Gregorian to Julian conversion
