Family

Daughter of Abraham Workman (1761-1858) and Margaret Lightner (1766-1850).

Place of birth is also given as Wythe Co or Burke's Garden, Tazewell Co, VA. NB: Wythe Co was not created until 1790 and Tazewell Co not until 1799.

Sarah "Sally" Workman married James Madison Marrs (1789-1859) on 26 Dec 1810 in Jacob's Cove (later Crockett's Cove), Tazewell Co, VA. They had fourteen children: Henry W. (1811-1881); Joseph (1813-1888); Olivia (1814-1906); John T. (1816-1875); James Madison, Jr. (1818-1891); Jane (1820-1862); Cynthia Ann (1820-1874); Thomas (1825-1908); David Whitley (1825-1891); Braxton Duncan (1826-?); Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" (1829-1875); Susannah "Sina" (1830-1870); Samuel (1833-1870); Wesley Price (1834-1910).

NB: "Emerini V. (1826-1914)" appears in several sources as a child of James Madison Marrs and Sarah "Sally" Workman. This is an error for Emerine Virginia Tabor (1826-1914), the wife of David Whitley Marrs 1825-1891). She was the daughter of Francis Tabor (1802-1872) and Mary "Polly" Shrader (1802-1872).

Locations and Land Holdings

James Madison Marrs and Sarah "Sally" Workman were married in Jacob's Cove (later called Crockett's Cove), Tazewell Co, VA, in 1810. They lived and paid taxes in Tazewell Co until about 1816 and then apparently moved to Cabell Co, VA, where they appear in the 1820 Federal census. They were back in Tazewell Co by the time the 1830 Federal Census was taken, but by the 1840 Federal census they had moved to Logan Co, VA, where they paid taxes. By the time of the 1850 Federal census they were back in Tazewell Co until they moved to Gentry Co, MO, where James purchased 40 acres of land from the Federal government on 1 June 1848. He bought another 120 acres of land on 2 Sep 1857 in Harrison Co, MO, where he died in Sep 1859. His widow, Sally, appears in the 1860 Federal census living in Clay Township, Harrison Co, MO, with the family of her son, Wesley Price Marrs. By Feb 1875 when she applied unsuccessfully for a pension based on James' War of 1812 service she was living with one of her sons in Grundy Co, MO. She died there in Nov 1879. NB: For additional information on locations, census results, taxes paid, and land purchased and sold, see Source 13 below.

Non-cemetery burial, presumably in either Harrison or Grundy Co, MO.
