Biography

William Wright was born 6 Feb 1779, Williamstown, Berkshire, MA. He died after 1860 in Delaware Co., Iowa, where by that time he was living with Luzetta Clarinda Wright Gilbert and her husband Charles Henry Gilbert. His parents were Justus/Justice Wright and Mercy Lamson/Lampson - this according to early Massachusetts records.[1]

First wife: Abigail Kilbourn, born about 1774, of Adams, Mass.; died 1805, in Adams, Berkshire, Mass. Her parents were either Gailes Kilbourne and Chloe Munger, or John Kilbourn and Anna Smith.

Second wife: Mary Bullard, b. 7 May 1773 in Holliston, Middlesex, MA; died 23 September 1839 in Jamestown, Chautauqua, NY. No parents names currently available. Her children: 1. Almira, b. 1804 in NY; married about 1770, died before 1889. Her spouse: Johnson or Ziba Balcom. 2. Mary, b. about 1807 in Oneida, NY; no further information; 3. William L. Wright, b. 22 April 1809 in Livingston, N.Y.; married Caroline Smith in Sheridan, Chautauqua, NY; died 13 April 1895 in Porter, Rock Co., WI.

Third wife: Plumilla Hart, 25 Dec 1785 in Vermont; died after 1860 in Delaware Co., Iowa; like her husband she was living with the Gilberts at the time of her death. Thom Carlson once found a record indicating that she might have been a granddaughter of an Elijah Hart, who had 3 sons. One was Reuben Hart, who had a daughter named Pluma, but not Plumilla, and definitely she was not the same person as our Plumilla. Another son of Elijah was a Timothy Hart, and we have no information on him; Thom thinks this may have been the father of our Plumilla. This appears highly likely given the family date/location/name connections.

Her children:

1. Asa W., b. 1815 in New York; married Sally Ann Hyatt on 25 Feb. 1839 in Huron, Ohio; d. beteen 1860 and 1870 in Ingham, MI.

2. Plumilla Jane, b. about 1817 in Massachusetts; married Sargent Leonard Field about 1840 in Chautauqua, NY; died 20 Aug. 1855; buried in Oakland cemetery, Delaware Co., Iowa.

3. Eli (named for one of William's two brothers, most likely), b. 1 Feb. 1819 in NY; married Mary A. Hicks on 2 July 1852 in Huron, OH; d. 13 Dec 1891 in Kent, MI.

4. Anna, b. 1821 in NY; no other information

5. Julia, b. 1823 in NY, no other information

6. Luzetta Clarinda Wright, b. 10 March 1825 (date from record kept by her daughter Plumilla Jane), in arkwright Twp., Chautauqua NY; married about 1838 in Arkwright; died 24 June 1879 in Hubbard twp., Hardin Co., Iowa. Hers was rather a tragic death; she was struck by lightning. Her son, then about 3 years old, was running around outside where he wasn't supposed to be because he had a cold. A storm blew up, and his grandmother stepped to the door of the cabin in which she and Charles were living behind the main McCoy house, to call him in. He'd just come past her into the cabin when she was hit. He had to climb over her body to get back out. Not too surprisingly, he was afraid of lightning his entire life. There was an oil painting hanging on the wall behind her of Charles's father Asahel Gilbert Jr. It was a likeness taken pre-camera, and somewhat damaged. I've seen the original, long since repaired, and have a copy of it.

7. Lucy M., born 30 July 1827 in Villenova, Cautauqua, NY; married Almon Pope on 3 July 1846, apparently in Villenova, and died 23 July 1875 in Chautauqua NY.

8. Emeline Scott Thompson (Scott is an odd middle name for a girl, and I've no idea where the Thompson came from, unless she was married multiple times - a distinct possibility), b. about 1830 in Chautauqua; married Orton Crowell 21 Jan 1853, in Chautauqua; died in 1891.

9. Mercy Ann, b. 1832, in Chautauqua, Chautauqua, NY; married George Ingram on 7 Oct 1849 in Chautauqua; died after 1880.
