Eazy-E, was an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur who propelled West Coast rap and gangsta rap by leading the group N.W.A (an abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes) [1] and its label, Ruthless Records pushing the boundaries with their lyrics, topics, and experiences growing up in Compton, California. Considered one of the most controversial and influential hip-hop groups of all time N.W.A. used "reality rap" to describe their experience with racism and excessive policing to tell this story. This controversial music included explicit references to gang life, drugs, sex, and distaste for authority, especially the police as stated with the song “Fuck tha Police.” [2]
Eric Lynn Wright was born to Richard and Kathie Wright on September 7, 1964,[3] in Compton, California, a Los Angeles suburb that was once noted for high crime rates and gang culture. [4][5] His father was a postal worker and his mother was a grade-school administrator.[6] Wright dropped out of high school in the tenth grade,[7] but later received a general equivalency diploma (GED).[8]
Wright had a son, Eric Darnell Wright (professionally known as Lil Eazy-E), in 1984. He also had a daughter, Erin,[9] who has legally changed her name to Ebie (E.B.).
Wright met Tomica Woods at a Los Angeles nightclub in 199. They married in 1995, twelve days before his death. They had a son named Dominick and a daughter named Daijah (born six months after Wright's death).[10]
On March 26, 1995, Eazy-E died from AIDS-induced pneumonia, one month after his diagnosis. He was 30 years old.[11] He is buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.[12]
