Biography

Sophia claimed she was born about 1853, the daughter of William Wright and Anne Jane Peden, however the most likely birth (with the same parents) is for 1845. There was a daughter of the same name for these parents (in 1845) who may have died young, so it is possible that a second Sophia was born around 1853. But it looks unlikely, with the 1845 birth/baptism the last recorded for these parents. If there was an 1853 birth, the birth/baptism is not recorded. Sophia is the last of 7 recorded children for these parents.

She was a field labourer when she gave birth to Sophia in 1878 and also when she married William Murphy at the Catholic Church in Wallacetown, Ayrshire in 1878.

By 1879 until 1881 they were living on the Prestwick Rd at St Quivox near Ayr.

By 1891 they were living at Byres Loch, Killwinning.

She passed away in 1930. Her normal residence at that time was with her daughter, Sophia and her family in Fergushill, Killwinning, Ayrshire.
