Biography

Katherine Wyatt, daughter of George Wyatt and his wife Jane (Finch) Wyatt, was baptized 13 October 1583 at Eastwell, Kent:

"Catherine Wyott daughter of George Wyott gent. was baptized the xiii^th day of October [1583]."^[1]

Katherine must have been the eldest child of George Wyatt and Jane Finch, as she was baptized just five days after their first anniversary as a married couple, assuming they had no children out of wedlock or any that were conceived prior to their wedding.

Katherine Wyatt was buried at Boxley, Kent, on 10 May 1608.^[2]

George Case, Vicar of Boxley, penned the following Latin epitaph for Katherine Wyatt in the parish register:

"Quam Fasti infesti! Nec norunt parcere Parcae! Mors mordax! Quovis caeca sepulchra loco! Quam bene te nostris (Katerina Viatta) Registris expunxisse velim, si modo Fata velint! Sed sic certa Dei constat sententia Summi crimine quae nata est, Morte metenda, seges. Quin metat ipsa sua resecandaque tempore falce, Namque Dei Vox est : Mors ego mortis ero."

Rev. Case provided his own translation of this passage:

"Unhappy Rolls, and you, more stubborn Fates,

Thou stinging Death, and Graves on every hand,

How well coulde I (fayre Katherine) erase these dates,

Yf Destinyes my wishe did not withstand ;

But now, syth thus it stands with God's decree,

That what in synne is sowne must downe by death,

It skyls not, let hym on, and wee shall see

Hymself cutt downe by hym that stops Death's breath."^[3]
