It would appear from his will that he married a widow Poythress. The woodliefs are believed to be descendants of Captain John Woodlief, who came to Virginia in 1620 to take charge of the well-known Berkeley plantation, in regard to which the "Smith of Nibley Papers," now in the New York Public Library, give so much interesting information. Robert Wynne's sons were living and married early in the 18th century. Thomas Wynne, gent, of Prince George county, was living in 1707, and then aged 50. In November of the same year, he, together with Agnes his wife, made deeds, recorded in Surry, to his daughter Mary Melone, and his son Robert Wynne. Major Joshua Wynne and Mary his wife, deeded a tract of land in Surry in 1708. In that year he was a justice of Prince George county. These brothers are believed to be ancestors of the Wynnes of southern Virginia.] Image

Hope some of this research will help with the ancestry of Robert Wynne. I was curious about his ancestry because he appeared to be so close to my Grendons: Col. Thomas and Lt. Col. Thomas Grendon. Overseer: Thomas Grendon, Merchant for Robert Wynn of Jordan's Parish, Charles City County, Va. July 1, 1675, and was also witness to will.

Overseer: Thomas Grendon, Merchant for Robert Wynn of Jordan's Parish, Charles City County, Va. July 1, 1675 Robert’s grandfather was a rich woolen Draper and probably associated with Col. Thomas Grendon thru the Draper’s Association in London. Paternal ancestry of Col. Robert Wynne By genealogy.com user April 30, 1999 at 08:12:24 .Col. Robert Wynne, Speaker of the House of Burgesses of Virginia, was the grandson of Robert Wynne, Mayor of Canterbury, Kent, in 1599.His father is stated in numerous sources on the Internet and elsewhere as being Sir John Wynne and his mother Sidney Gerrard (, whose History of the Gwydir Family (i.e., his ownGwynne/Wynne family) is one of the Welsh classics. His wife was the daughter of Sir William Gerrard, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, whose life as a judge in Ireland was distinguished not only by a burning sense of justice but also by a compassion for the poor people of Ireland uncharacteristic of his time.Proud though one might be to be descended from these great men,

Sir John Wynn, as a reference to the article in the essential Dictionary of National Biography will show, was a distinguished figure in the rough-and-tumble Elizabethan world where politics and finance were intricately intertwined, and came from a family descended not only from the Welsh kings and princes but also from Cardinal Beaufort, son of John of Gaunt, son of Edward III, and from the highest nobility of England, but he is more noted as being a great antiquary, whose History of the Gwydir Family (i.e., his ownGwynne/Wynne family) is one of the Welsh classics. His wife was the daughter of Sir William Gerrard, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, whose life as a judge in Ireland was distinguished not only by a burning sense of justice but also by a compassion for the poor people of Ireland uncharacteristic of his time.Proud though one might be to be descended from these great men, we, or at least the descendants of Col. Robert Wynne, are not.

Robert the Mayor and his wife Frances (Wattmer) died in 1609 within a couple of days of each other, apparently of the plague. The Mayor was a rich woolen draper, and these sudden and unexpected deaths caused a tremendous mess.On her beautifully maintained and informative web site (http://home.att.net/~c.middleton/) Carol Middleton includes a fascinating paper by Dorothy Gardiner, F.S.A., which sets out in rich detail what this led to and how the Mayor's children were provided for by Alderman William Wattmer (although the article never mentions that he was the Mayor's brother-in-law and was caring for his own nieces and nephews, and curiously says that the Mayor's son Peter's children died during their father's lifetime, which is disproved by his will and the wills of his son and father, the two Robert Wynnes, also available on this web site). In this paper, Gardiner says and proves that the Mayor and his wife were buried in his family tomb in St. George's, Canterbury. Thank you for posting this wonderful research on the Wynnes and making clear that Robert Wynne of Canterbury was not the son of Sir John.

correction name of witness is Thomas Grendon (either Col. or son Lt. Col. Thomas Grendon)

Thomas Grendon relatives of Edward Grendon, Ancient Planter, settler before the "starving time"

Also some other relatives mentioned at end of this data:

Robert WYNNE was born before 28 Dec. 1622, Canterbury, England (christened at St. Dunstan's church on this date). From 1657-60, he appears in various records as burgess from Charles City Co., VA, and 1661-74, he was speaker of the VA House. He d. bef. 8 Oct. 1675, evidently in Charles City Co. His will, dated 1 July 1675, was probated in England on 15 Aug. 1678. The will identifies Robert WYNNE as of Jordan's Parish, Charles City Co.,VA, and asks that he be buried in the Jordan's church near his son Robert. To his oldest son Thomas, he leaves a farm in Whitestaple Parish near Canterbury, England, called Limbet Banckes, along with two houses in Canterbury in St. Mildred's Parish. To son Joshua he leaves a house and oatmeal mill in Dover Lane outside St. George's, Canterbury, called the Lilly Pot, and two tenant houses. Sons Thomas and Josuah are also left property in VA, the latter receiving the plantation called George's. To his daughter Mary Woodlief, he leaves a servant, and to Mary's son George he also leaves property. The rest of the estate went to Robert WYNNE's wife and extrx. Mary. The overseers of the estate were to be Thomas GRENDON and Robert WYNNE's son-in-law [i.e., stepson] Capt. Francis POYTHRESS. Mary, the widow POYTHRESS's, maiden name is not known. The children of Robert WYNNE were as follows: Thomas WYNNE (1657, Charles City Co.-1718, Prince George or Surry Co., VA), m. 1)---- and 2)Agnes STITH and had issue: Joseph (m. ----LLEWELLYN), and Sloman (m. Elizabeth STITH) by first spouse; Thomas (m. 1]Ann, d/o Robert BOLLING and Ann STITH, 2]Martha, perhaps widow of his brother Joseph), Robert (m. 1]Martha JEFFERSON, 2]Mary PHILIPSON), Mary (m. Nathaniel MALONE), and Lucy (m. John COX), these by Agnes STITH.

There are 3 Mary Wynne's listed as daughters. All were alive at the same time. The 3 should be merged with a check into DOB and DOD. The best way to start fixing this data and the sources is to get them merged.

Hello kindred spirits!

Three thoughts on Mary Sloman here, and the Wynne family:

First, there are duplicate pages for Mary Sloman. This should be fixed with a merge.

Second, the birthdates currently on wikitree imply either a) her first daughter Mary Wynne was born in England, two years before marrying Robert Wynne; or b) Wynne had another wife, before our Mary. What's the solution? It's not a good "fix" to un-link daughter Mary Wynne from presumptive mom Mary Sloman, is it?

Third, the birthdates here imply Mary Sloman first started having children in her late 40s (noteworthy) then continued through her late 50s (dubious at best), in austerity of colonial Virginia.

What evidence do we have for her birthdate? Generic "1600-00-00" in generic "London-Middlesex-England" is bothersome

IF Mary (Poythress nee Sloman) Wynne, then probably the two sons Joshua should merge.

IF "Mary, the widow POYTHRESS's, maiden name is not known." (see information posted on Poythess-1), then the two sons should not merge.

could he be the father of the Rebecca (Wynne-533) shown as a wife to this Francis Poythress? (which would make Francis his son-in-law). There's still the problem of Francis being married to his father-in-law's wife, Mary Sloman, and that Francis's son John Poythress is said to have named his step-brothers Thomas & Joshua Wynn the executors of his will (see comment on Poythress-8). Thomas and Joshua are shown in WikiTree as Robert's sons by Mary Sloman, not Francis Poythress and Rebecca Wynn's sons).
