Biography

Sarah Elizabeth Yates was born about 1848 in North Carolina.^[1][2] She married Robert Harrelson in about 1872 in North Carolina.^[3]

Research Notes

The 1910 census lists Sarah E Harrelson as the wife of Robert Harrelson.^[3] The certificate of death for their daughter, Mrs. Mary Harrelson Hall, lists Robert Harrelson and Elizabeth Yates as her parents.^[5] Although the 1910 census has Robert's birth years listed as 1854 and Elizabeth's birth listed as 1850, those dates are incorrect. The headstones appear to have the correct years of birth as 1857 and 1848. Perhaps the census taker was trying to hide the fact that Elizabeth was almost 10 years older than Robert. Since the 1910 census states that they were married for 38 years at that time, one may presume they married in about 1878 when she was 30 and he was 19.
