Biography

Albert was born about 1874 [1]

Albert was described as follows

Inquiry requested for the whereabouts of Albert William Yates; supposed left New Zealand on the 22nd ultimo, by the s.s. "Wimmera," for Sydney, and not since heard of. About 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, fair hair and complexion, sandy moustache; usually dressed in blue serge suit and soft-felt hat. Information to his sister, Mrs. Ethel Ballard, Florence-terrace, Edinburgh Road, Marrickville.[2]

He worked as a coach painter, and in September 1914, was forced to apply for assistance to the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, reason given being "failure to find work due to war". Relatives who may be able to assist were named as his mother, Sarah Jones, in Sydney; and his father-in-law, Robert McCoomb, in Gisborne. [3]. The start of the war saw his family at Te Kuiti, while in 1918, they were at Te Awamutu.

By 1919, the Yates' family had moved to Whangarei, where they were joined by Albert's father-in-law, Robert McCoomb [4]

My father says he was a master coach painter, who did fine detail work, and remembers that my grandad inherited all his bushes and equipment.
