DNA testing is far more powerful than most people realize, especially when we collaborate (please bring your tests to GEDmatch.) You can't get very far with your own test alone. Recruit a group of siblings, aunts, and cousins to share though and major sections of chromosomes can be reconstructed for a great grandparent born 150 years ago. Next, by understanding the way chromosomes are recombined and passed on, we can discover grandparents of the great grandparent -- our 3rd-great grandparents -- sometimes with remarkable clarity. Many trees have been guessed wrong at this distance and can be corrected. Evidence from our chromosomes can be stronger than evidence from scant records.

I dropped in in hopes of finding a paternal cousin. Looks like we're extremely distantly related - through my maternal side.

Thank you for working on Hunt entries :0)

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Azure, I have a question. I have a tree nearing 3500 people at Ancestry. Several are guesses or works in progress. I don't quite understand what will happen if I upload a GEDcom file here. Am I the only one who will see my GEDcom tree here? Can I later remove it, when I have an improved version to upload? Thanks.

Hi John

I am pleased to welcome you as a member of the WikiTree family. Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world’s trees together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Please add as much information as you can, with sources, as it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Thank you for adding your DNA Test to your profile on WikiTree. Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. To get the best results, you need to start with yourself and add sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to existing profiles in WikiTree. 24 hours later, your test will have populated on the profiles of your ancestors and their descendants, where others with potential matches may also appear.

Have fun collaborating on your ancestors

Wendy ~ WikiTree Greeter
