Biography

Flag of Warwickshire (adopted 2016)
James Yeomans was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.

James was born in Birmingham on 14 March 1854.[1] He was the son of Joseph Yeomans and Catherine Sandford.[2]

When James was 7, he was recorded with his parents and siblings at 10 Loxton Street. His father was an iron plate worker.[3]

By the time of 1871 census, James' father had died. His mother and some of his siblings were living at 7 Gee Street. Also there was his cousin Sarah A Sandford, and aunt Ann Brownhill.[4]

James married Mary Ann Johnson in 1874. They married at St Jude's Church on Hill Street, Birmingham.[5] Both bride and groom had been living on this same street at the time of their marriage. The area was one of the poorest parts of Birmingham at the time so they were likely not well off.[6]

The couple were to have 9 children - their first child, Florence in 1877 and their last, William Edward in 1900.

In the 1881 census, James was recorded living at the back of 20 Barn Street, Birmingham with Mary Ann and their two young children, Florence (4) and John Joseph (8 months). Also boarding with them was 20-year-old iron plate worker, Thomas Johnson - possibly a relative of Mary Ann.[7]

The family (now with six children) were recorded in the 1891 census living at [House] 40, Court 6, Hospital Street, Birmingham.[8]

At the time of his daughter Leah's birth in 1897, the family were living at 41 New John Street, Birmingham.[9][10]

The next year, 1898, his daughter Florence Ann married. She appears to have died giving birth to a child soon after.

In 1900, James' wife Mary Ann died soon after giving birth to their youngest child, William Edward.

A year later, James was recorded at 41 New John Street with his 8 children, (ages ranging from 20 to just 1 year old). Three of his eldest children were also contributing to the household income - John was a bicycle material polisher, while Catherine and Emily worked in the jewellery industry as a press worker and chain maker.[11]

In the 1911 census, James, now 56, was recorded with his three youngest children, James Arthur Yeomans, Leah, and William Edward. They were boarding in the house of Emma Hawley at 25 "Penn Street Curzon St" (Possibly the corner of both streets). James and his son Arthur were both Iron Plate Workers for the Boiler Works and Leah was a printers errand girl. Also there at the time were two of Emma's daughters, 29-year-old Georgina E Hawley, and 17-year-old Dorothy A Hawley. Arthur would go on to marry Dorothy five years later.[12]

James died in 1936 at the age of 82.[13]
