Biography

William Young served in the United States Civil War.
Side: CSA

When William H Young was born on 18 May 1815 in North Carolina, his father, Benjamin, was 26 and his mother, Judith, was 24.

He married Nancy Elizabeth Wood on 26 May 1846 in Stokes, North Carolina. [1]

They had eight children in 13 years. First US Census for the family was in 1850 with William and Bettie and their first two children, John and Martha. [2]

In the 1860 US Census, William and his wife "Bettie" as I assume he called her, were living next door to my third great-grandmother, Mourning Ashby. William and Bettie had all eight of their children living at home with them at this time.[3]

Military Service

William Young joined the CSA to do his bit in 1864 at the age of 49. He was assigned to Capt William H Watt's company on 23 June 1864 in Germantown. They traveled through Georgia and Florida until 1865. They returned during Carolina's campaign under Gen Joseph Johnston's Army of Tennessee where they joined the battles of Averasboro and Bentonville, North Carolina. [4] (Note:The 7th Regiment, Senior Reserves was later known as the 77th Regiment after the war).

Back home again...

In the 1870 US Census, William and Bettie had only five of their children at home, with the two elder sons working with their father as farm labourers. My own grandfather was there as a 15 year old. [5]

Last census for William Young in 1880. He and Bettie still had one child at home, Caleb, and my grandfather, Pleasant and his wife, Augusta lived next door with their first two children. [6]

Will

William Young's last will and testament was signed by his four executors, his sons, John, James, Pleasant, and Caleb Young on 3 April 1882. Strangely, I think we have William Young's death date wrong because people normally die before execution of their wills. [7]

He died on 3 April 1882 [8] in his hometown at the age of 66, and was buried in Snow Creek, North Carolina.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
