Marie d'Abancourt dite Lacaille[1][2]

Marie d'Abancourt was born around 1618 (per the censuses of 1666 and 1667), at Soissons in ancient Île-de-France province, now situated in Aisne départment . She emigrated to Canada around 1635, at the age of 17, with her parents, Adrien d'Abancourt and Simone d'Orgeville (or Orville).[3]

Marriage 1

On the 9th of October 1639 [4][5] at Québec, she married Jean Jolliet, aged 43, master cartwright for the Company of One Hundred Associates. The priest celebrating this was Nicolas Adam of the Company of Jesus (Jesuit)[6][7][8] Named as present were Nicolas Marsolet and Jean Nicollet.

The couple perhaps lived on the shores of the Beaupré coast. The Bourdon map of 1641 records a piece of land co-owned by Simone Orville, wife of Adrien d'Abancourt and mother of Marie, and Jean Jolliet her son-in-law, five kilometres from the Montmorency Falls, on the banks of the St-Lawrence 14.

Jean Joliet and Marie d'Abancourt had the following known children:[9]

  1. Adrien Joliet, b c 1643; married Jeanne Dodier 22 Jan 1664 Trois-Rivières
  2. anonyme Jolliet boy, born and buried 4 Jun 1644 Québec (ND)
  3. Louis Joliet, bapt 21 Sept 1645 Québec (ND); married Claire Françoise Bissot 7 Oct 1675 Québec (ND)
  4. Marie Joliet, b 31 Mar 1648 bapt 16 Apr Québec (ND) (godmother was Simone Orville, grandmother)
  5. Zacharie Joliet, b 23 Dec 1650 bapt 24 Québec (ND); married Marie Niel 24 Nov 1678 Québec (ND)

Jean Jolliet died on April 24, 1651 at the age of 55 in the hospital at Québec, after 12 years of marriage.[10]

Marriage 2

Marie d'Abancourt remarried on October 19th 1651 in Notre-Dame de Québec with Geoffroy Guillot (dit Lavallée), son of Jean Guillot and Jeanne Coutin, of the parish of St-André, Ruffec, Angoumois.[11][1], in the presence of Denis Duquet and Jean Noët.

Known children from this marriage:[9]

  1. Jean Guillot, b 26 Nov 1653 bapt 17 Dec Québec (ND); died 1692
  2. Élisabeth Guillot, b 4 May 1656 bapt 5 Jun Québec (ND); married Jean Charret 3 Feb 1669 Québec (ND)
  3. Louise Guillot, b 11 Aug 1659 bapt 8 Sept Québec (ND); married Mathurin Renou 7 Nov 1672 Château-Richer

She and her husband Geoffroy Guillot made a sale to François Fortin in 1662

Vente de Geoffroy Guillot dit LaVallée et Marie D’Abancour à François Fortin (1er octobre 1662). Vol I pg 123 Notaire Claude Auber[12]

Geoffroy Guillot died before July 1665. An inventory of property was done and finished on July 18th of that year.

Marriage 3

(contrat de) Mariage de Martin Prévost et Marie Dabancour (28 octobre 1665). Vol I pg 131 Notaire Claude Auber[12]

Marie Dabancour, widowed again, remarried on 8 Nov 1665 in the chapel of Beauport (record kept in Québec - ND) with Martin Prévost, himself a widower.[13] Witnesses named were Robert Giffard and Charles Cadieu dit Courville, officiating priest being Charles Delauson, grand-vicar of the bishop.

No issue from this marriage.[9]

Marie d'Abancour made a sale to the bishop of Québec François de Laval in 1668. In 1676 she issued a quitclaim to him, presumably for the same transaction.

Death

1680, [15]

No funeral record has been identified as hers, she made her last will and testament in December 1678. She is absent from 1681 census, where her last husband is listed with some of his children. Her place of death would presumably have been either Beauport where they resided or else Hôtel-Dieu hospital in Québec, for which records are not easily accessible before 1689.

Recensement 1681 Census: SEIGNEURIE DE BEAUPORT.

have asked Migrations site what their criteria were to include her. Waiting to hear back.

She shouldn't be on a list of Filles à Marier, as she was accompanied by both of her parents. I'm curious what criteria Migrations is using to come up with their list.

Have just uploaded Marie D'Abancourt's testament, done on 16 December 1678 before Notary Paul Vachon. Not an easy read, since the handwriting is sometimes difficult, and parts are faint as well. Of her known children, I find mention of exactly 3: Zacharie Jolliet, Louis Jolliet, and Louise Guillot, 2 are clear legacies, the third (Louis) appears to be in part executor from the looks of it, although it's hard to tell. I find no mention of her son Jean at all, nor of Adrien and Élizabeth. Adrien is known dead in 1669, Élisabeth died between 1675 when her last child is born and 1680 (funeral not found). From this evidence, it appears that her son Jean did indeed die in 1676, being buried under the name Jean Joliet. So did not marry Marguerite Dusson
