Unknown Parents

The parents of Tannatje Adams have not been identified. Some online genealogies identify her father as Albert Adams, but there is no evidence for this. Based on Dutch naming practices of the times, "Adam" would have been her father's first name, and "Adams" would have been her patronymic name (not a family surname). The suggestion that her father's first name was Albert suggests that his child was thought to have the patronymic Albertsz; this may indicate understandable confusion between Tannatje Adams and Jannetje Albertsz, wife of Pieter Pietersz Winne.

Biography

Tannatje (Tannetje, possibly Jannetje) Adams was the second wife of Pieter Winne. They married some time before the birth of their first child, Adam Winne, who is estimated to have been born in about 1656.

Tannatje Adams was born about 1638[citation needed] in Leeuwarden, Vrieslandt, Netherlands. she was 29 years younger than Peter. Her parents are unknown. There is no known basis for the claim that her parents were Albert Adams and Aeltje Wygerts. After Pieter died, she married Marten Cornelisz Van Buren, on 7 May 1693.

Marten Cornelise Van Buren (an ancestor of President Martin Van Buren) was born 1638-1639 at Fort Orange, New York. In 1665 he married Marytjie Quackenbosch at Fort Orange. Marten owned a house and barn in Bethlehem, NY, which he sold in 1662. Marten leased half of Constapel Island south of Albany, from Teunis Spitsbergen, and Marytjie died there in December of 1683. Peter Winne bought the other half of the island in July 1675; thus, Tannatje and Marten shared an island before they shared a marriage. They also shared sons- and daughters-in-law after 1682 when Marten’s son Teuntje Martens Van Buren married Tannatje Adams' step-son, Levinus VanSchaick Winne. Marten died on 13 November 1703, in Kinderhook, New York.

Tannatje Adams and Pieter Winne made a joint will in 1677. In that will, her native place was identified as Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands. Her birthdate is not recorded, but she probably was born in the 1630s, based on the estimated birthdates of her children.[1]

After their marriage, which likely took place in the Netherlands, the family settled at Bethlehem in Nieuw Netherland, near Albany, New York. Pieter Winne owned considerable farm property, sawmills and timber lands. Pieter and Tannetie had twelve children. Sources are generally consistent regarding their names, but differ on the order and dates of some of their births: [2][3]

  1. Adam Winne, born about 1656 in Bethlehem, New Netherland;
  2. Aletta (a.k.a. Allette or Alecta) Winne, born about 1657 in Bethlehem, New Netherland, married Casper Leendertse Conyn;
  3. Lavinus (a.k.a. Livinius) Winne, b. abt 1658 in Bethlehem, New Netherland;
  4. Jacobus Winne, b. 1659 in Bethlehem, New Netherland;
  5. Frans Winne, born about 1660 in Bethlehem, New Netherland;
  6. Daniel Winne, born 1663 in Bethlehem, New Netherland;
  7. Killiaen Winne, born 1668 in Bethlehem, Albany, New York;
  8. Tomas Winne, born 1670 in Bethlehem, Albany, New York;
  9. Lyntje Winne, born 1674 in Bethlehem, Albany, New York;
  10. Marten Winne, born 1676 in Bethlehem, Albany, New York;
  11. Rachel Winne, born 1677 in Bethlehem, Albany, New York;
  12. Eva Winne, born 1680 in Bethlehem, Albany, New York.

Pieter Winne died some time after 6 July 1684, when he made a second will to replace the first one,[4] and before 7 May 1693, when his widow Tannetje married Marten Cornelisse Van Buren as her second husband.[5][6]

Tannetje died by 1697, when records described Van Buren as a widower.[5]

(2) I saw a lot of Winne and De Winne in Gent, so my hypothesis was/is that this Franciscus might be from Gent and stationed as a soldier in Leeuwarden. His wife having a southern Dutch name (Flemish) and their children having names that are very common in Gent and not at all in Friesland, like Judoca.

And then there is this phenomenon that Frisian name are rather unpronounceable in English. My uncle Wiepke was renamed to Bill as soon as his settled down in Canada. Tannetje might be the transformation of a typical unpronounceable Frisian name.

1638 seems also to me a good estimate for her year of birth and the range of children being born between 1656 and 1680.

Gent might be a clue in finding more sources, so 'Belgian Roots' might come in to help.

Sorry for this, it was not meant as a proposal. I should have read the biography more accurate.

I was looking for a family with siblings and a father that had names in common with Tannetje's children. A method that led to finding sources in other cases. The search function of 'Allefriezen' is not perfect, so I did some research 'around. And I held in mind that a birthplace in a will at the other side of the ocean might be transformed from a local village into the capital of a province.

Initiataly I was looking for her husbands father Franciscus Winne, stated to be born in Leeuwarden and to have died there, without giving any sources. Seeing all his children being baptized in Gent, I searched for a marriage in the church registers of Gent. I saw a lot of Winne and De Winne

I am not understanding why it is proposed that a girl who had the patronymic name Adams (and who named her first son Adam) is assumed to have a father with the name of Andries. I see plenty of men named Adam in Friesland in the relevant time period. It's most likely that her father's given name was Adam.

Note that the https://www.genealogieonline.nl/familytree-fuchs/I8121.php website is an unsourced family tree. Not a reliable source.

The birth location of Leeuwarden, Vrieslandt is from her will. That's a pretty good clue.

I think the birth date of 1638 is a good estimate, since she had babies from about 1656 to 1680. If she was born in 1638, that's an age range of 18 to 42. However, she could have been born few years earlier or maybe a year or so later.

Found a source for Jancke, daughter of Andries Adams and Eebel Taeckes. Born on Jan. 13, 1639 at Sneek, Friesland.

Adams could be Andries or Adriaans; found her naam as 'Jannettje Andriens, born round 1611 at Friesland. Passed away in 1693. Married to Pieter Winne in 1643 at Belgium.

I removed the connection to Albert Adams as Tannetje's father, per notes on both profiles.

I agree, Ellen, that Albert Adams should be detached as father of Tannatje Adams, for the reasons that you give.
I can't see a basis for attaching Albert Adams as the father of Tannetje Adams. I'd like to detach that profile from this one. I've assumed that Adams was her patronymic name, indicating that her father's first name was Adam. Her first son was named Adam, which would be consistent with her father having been named Adam.

The wife of Pieter Pietersen Winne, oldest son of Pieter Winne, was Jannetje Albertsz. Did Tannetje Adams, wife of Pieter Winne, get confused/conflated with Jannetje Albertsz, wife of Pieter Pietersen Winne? (The similarity of names makes it incredibly easy to get them mixed up!)
