Biography

Warren J. Ayer, Jr. grew up in Newark Valley in Tioga Co., New York. He attended Newark Valley Central High School, where he was in the Honor Society, played Cornet in the band, wrote for the town newspaper, and served as president of the Photography Club. It was also where he met the woman who would become his first wife.
Warren went on to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering and Applied Superconductivity. He was employed by International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), initially in semiconductor electronics process development and reliability engineering. In 1980 he was named one of the top three Outstanding Young American Electrical Engineers [1] in the United States by Eta Kappa Nu, the national electrical engineering honor society. He went on to hold a variety of management and executive positions with IBM. For several years he was a Strategic Account Development Executive reporting to the vice-chairman of the IBM Board of Directors. When he retired after 30 years, he was the Director of Competitive Strategy for IBM's Microelectronics Division (which was sold to Global Foundries in 2015).
After retiring from IBM, Warren and his wife founded Ayer Photography of Vermont, specializing in wedding and portrait photography in northern Vermont and New York. Together they earned several Imaging Excellence Awards from Vermont Professional Photographers and had many images published by Vermont Bride Magazine, including two covers. Several of his images have been accepted into the General Collection at the International Print Competition of the Professional Photographers of America.
Together, Warren and his wife have three children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Warren was also a Certified Lay Speaker, serving for many years as a guest preacher in several protestant churches in Vermont and New York.
Warren began researching his family ancestry in 1987 at the prompting of his great aunt Isabelle (Ayer) Baggott. So began years of walking through cemeteries, scrolling through microfiche, haunting antiquarian bookstores, and sifting through dusty records in Town Clerk's offices, libraries, and historical societies throughout the northeast.

Hi Warren,

We're sad to inform you that the Black Sheep Project is being dissolved. All BSP's subprojects will be moved in pieces under the Notables Project as categories and perhaps as Teams, depending on interest. Witch Trials will become a subproject of Notables.

Your BSP project member badge will soon be removed. If you'd like to join the Notables project, please let one of us know and we'll get you a Notables badge.

Please email either of us if you have any questions and if you'd like to join the Notables project.

Thanks, Susan McNamee & Traci Thiessen ~Co-leaders, Black Sheep Project

Great bio! I grew up in Central NY, near an ancestor's grave marked SAR that got me interested in genealogy. I have a couple of Ayer in my ancestors. I attended SUNY Albany, then worked at Rome Labs developing computerized mapping software in the mid 1970s. My cousin Norm lives near Syracuse and is a PPA member, focusing on the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes.
