* A problem with research of this family "has been the variable spelling of the surname. Although most in the family at the earliest recorded times spelled it McGlaugh!in, when the name was recorded "officially" (by whoever issued marriage licenses, took census records, recorded deeds, etc.), the name was spelled in many different ways (McLaughlin, McGlothlin, McGlocklin, etc). Later, some in the family changed the spelling to McLaughlin." <ref>Colton, Barbara Snyder; "The Mc(G)Laughlin Family, Early Settlers of Meigs, Vinton and Athens Counties, Ohio".
