This category is for ships launched during the 1840s.
If you had an ancestor who was an officer or crew member on a ship, then categorize them by the ship. If you have found your ancestors on a passenger list, you should categorize them by the sailing, rather than directly to the ship. To find individual sailings, see Sailings By Decade.
In order to sort ships by name, when you link a ship to this category, use the following format:
[[Category:Ships by Name|Shipname (####)]]
where "Shipname" is the name of the ship without any prefix like S.S., R.M.S., etc., and "####" is the year that ship was launched. That way, all the ships will be sorted by name, rather than by prefix, and, where there are several ships which have the same name, they will be sorted chronologically.
