The Parliament of the United Kingdom, commonly known as the UK Parliament or British Parliament, is the supreme legislative body in the United Kingdom, British Crown dependencies and British overseas territories. Its head is the Sovereign of the United Kingdom and its seat is the Palace of Westminster in the City of Westminster, London.
Historically there are two distinct parts to the Parliament:
- Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland created in 1801 by the merger of the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland under the Acts of Union and replaced the Members of the Parliament of Great Britain and Members of the Parliament of Ireland.
- Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was created in 1920 through the division of Ireland into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. In 1927 parliament was renamed the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
