Category: Gustave Anjou Fraud
Categories: Frauds and Fabrications
Gustave Anjou (WikiTree profile Jungberg-7) was a noted purveyor of genealogical fraud. In her book Family Trees (Harvard University Press, 2013), Francoise Weil characterizes him as a "charlatan operating on a relatively large scale," selling fabricated genealogies to Americans over three decades and advertising complete genealogies for a $250 fee. Wikipedia has an excellent writeup describing his exploits as does Geni.
The result of his exploits was a number of impressive but untrustworthy genealogies, with a mixture of accurately documented facts and errors, which those who have followed him have had to weed out, piece by piece and item by item. This WikiTree G2G discussion includes a catalog of his fraudulent work: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/232796/this-is-more-of-a-comment-than-a-question
This category is a location to identify the profiles of people whose biographies or family histories have been affected by Gustave Anjou's fraud. "Affected" is the operative word -- listing in this category does NOT mean that the profile itself is fraudulent; hopefully it is listed because the fraud has been identified and corrected.
To add this category to a profile, insert: [[Category:Gustave_Anjou_Fraud]] into the profile's bio.
