This category contains profiles of members of the Ho-Chunk tribe.

The Hocąk nation, also known by the foreign designation, "Winnebago," is a Siouan tribe that has probably been in existence since at least 1500 A.D. They evolved from a tribe that included Jiwere speakers (Ioway, Oto, Missouria), but have always been viewed as the "original" tribe, and addressed as "grandfather" or "big brother," rather like the Delaware among the Algonkian tribes. Today they are divided about evenly between the tribe headquartered in their native Wisconsin and the tribe living on the reservation in Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska. As genealogy extends back beyond the time of this artificial division, it is important to have a category that embraces the reality of their common heritage, speech, and culture. "Ho-Chunk" is being used rather than Hocąk, as easy accessibility is wanting for the special character /ą/, and "Ho-Chunk" is officially recognized as the acceptable English phonetic rendering of Hocąk. In the Hocąk language, the letter "c" is pronounced "CH" and the letter "ą" has the little nasal hook and makes the "N" sound (similar to the sound in the word honk).

The Ho-Chunk, also known as Hoocągra or Winnebago, are a Siouan-speaking Native American people whose historic territory includes parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. Today, Ho-Chunk people are enrolled in two federally recognized tribes:
  • the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin
  • the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
