Mary Virginia grew up in the household of her parents in Georges Township in Smithfield, Fayette, Pennsylvania. At the age of 11 years old, it is reported that went to school and could both read and write.[3]
On 4 February 1907, Mary Virginia married a James Aberm Hager in Corunna, Shiawassee Michigan.[4] Together they had one child:
Their marriage did not last long, and by 1910 Mary Virginia and her young daughter Josephine moved back in to the household Mary Virginia's parents.[5]
On 18 April 1911, Mary Virginia re-married Odus Troy Spiker in Uniontown, Fayette, Pennsylvania.[6] Like Mary Virginia, Odus had been married once before. Together they moved to Morgantown, Monongalia, West Virginia.[7] They would have five children together:
Around 1940, the family moved from Morgantown to McKeesport in Allegheny, Pennsylvania.[9] They rented a home for $30 a month at 700 White Street.[9] Around 1942, Odus, Mary and their family would relocate to a more permanent home at 703 Hazel Street in McKeesport, while he worked at Carnegie Illinois Steel Corporation Mills (Irwin Works).[10]
Mary Virginia (Hartman) Spiker passed away on 29 January 1960 in Monongalia County, West Virginia.[2] She was 70 years old. She is buried in the Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery in Smithfield, Fayette, Pennsylvania alongside her husband, Odus Troy Spiker, who died two years prior.[11][12]
