Frederick P. Hartman was born out of wedlock on 9 November 1867 in Fayette, Pennsylvania to Mary J. Hartman.[1] His father is thought to be William Henry Harrison Swaney, who was Mary J. Hartman's neighbor at the time.[1]
Frederick grew up with his mother Mary in the household of his grandparents, Charles Hartman and Jane Gates in Georges Township, Pennsylvania.[2]
He was working as a young farmer when he married Caroline Josephine Conn Jenkins on 9 September 1891 in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.[3] At the time, she was 24 years old and he was a year younger at 23. At the time, they were both living in Hopwood in Fayette County. They both settled in Smithfield, Fayette, Pennsylvania.[4][5]
Frederick worked on farms all his life. At the time of his death, he had been working as a dealer of horses and farm implements.[1]
Frederick P. Hartman passed away on 1 May 1915 from carcinoma of the liver and stomach.[1] He was only 48 years old. He is buried at the Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery in Smithfield, Fayette, Pennsylvania.[9]
Research Notes
There has been some speculation about Frederick's father from various online trees that intersect with this line. On Frederick's application for marriage license to Caroline Jenkins, a "Charley Hartman" was listed as his father.[3] However, on his death certificate, "William Swaney" is listed as the father by Frederick's mother Mary J Hartman, who served as the informant.[1]
