Arthur Joseph Pountney was born at Sandy Creek, near Ravenswood, in the Colony of Queensland, on the 18th of July 1896, the fifth son and seventh child of Elon Pountney and Phebe Ann Onions.[1][2]

Arthur met Myrtle Maud Mayoh about 1924, and at that time, was travelling from Ravenswood to Home Hill, cutting cane. He then started work at Kalamia Mill carrying sugar bags in 1925. Later getting work at the mill as offsider to the mill surveyor...
Arthur married Myrtle Mayoh at Townsville on the 17th of August 1927,[3][4] their son Kenneth was born in 1928, and daughter Claire was born in 1936.

Arthur had a Mining Lease which he worked with his brother Edwin from 1925 until at least 1931.
The 1937 census has Arthur living at Deltavale, however, the house was always on the two blocks of ground of 1/2 acre each, totaling 1 acre, at 35-39 Cox Street, Ayr, Queensland.

Arthur filled the position of an Air Raid Warden during World War Two and had a Whistle and Warden Pin. He also had a green thumb, and always had a vegetable garden at the Cox Street residence. As an aside, Arthur was able to cut men's hair, and had a full barber's set of haircutting tools in a purpose made wooden box. For extra income Arthur also lined the inside of water tanks, with a slurry of concrete. Water Tanks and Windmills were a common vista where water was needed.

Arthur and Myrtle spent their entire married life without a motorcar or a telephone.
Arthur Pountney passed away at Townsville, Queensland, Australia, int the Townsville Hospital, on the 3rd of December 1973[5][6] from natural causes, after a cataract operation, and was laid to rest in the Ayr Cemetery, GR No 3158, at 3pm on the 5th of December.
