Granddaughter of Volga Germans & Black Sea Germans from Russia

Born on a farm in northeastern Colorado, I am granddaughter to German-Russian immigrants on every single line of my family. Most lines are Volga-German and some maternal ancestors are Black Sea Germans. It has been fascinating to find their Germanic origins and also to know that we have Scandinavian heritage. Weddings and anniversary parties involved Dutch Hops and I grew up with a father who plays accordion by ear. What is Dutch Hop?

I was blessed to have many wonderful cooks and bakers in my family. My grandmothers would show me how to make their recipe with a pinch of this and handful of that, so recipes were scarce. I learned at a very young age to cook (huge amounts when you grow up on a farm). We learned their custom of using up what you have and waste nothing, which makes for some creative living skills.

Most of the relatives in my family farmed, had large gardens, where irrigation and field work were plentiful along with delicious food from the harvest. We ate German-Russian foods like Grebbel (similar to donut pastry), Maultaschen (like sweet ravioli dough but filled with either potato, cottage cheese or fruit), Rival Kuchen (sweet dough custard with fruit and streusel topping), cabbage pockets (aka krautburgers; aka bierocks), home-made sausage, chicken noodle butter-ball soup, etc. As I learned more about the German-Russian heritage, I realized that certain areas have different customs: an example is that North Dakota immigrants tended to make more custard kuchens vs. our more textured crumble kuga dessert in Colorado.

For a high school English historical project, I enjoyed interviewing a dear friend of our family and member of our church (many were of German-Russian descent) and ended up learning more about my own family in the process. I gained such an amount of respect for this groups' hardiness, perseverance, strong work ethic, and ability to hold onto their customs while fitting in to two (if not more) new countries. Many escaped religious persecution and wars.

There are wonderful memories but there are also very painful memories of the relatives left behind who were starved at Stalin's hands and many loaded up like cattle in train cars for deportation to Siberia. A cousin who recently passed told me that his mother had received letters from relatives saying they were starving. It had to be very difficult to be unable to help. As like most who end up in genealogy, I wish I would have known to write down things I had learned from family. Several years ago, what started out as a DNA test for health reasons, turned into a blessing to be able to find more information about my family tree. I also have helped an adoptee find her heritage she never knew and also found some of my living relatives in both Germany and Russia. Through this journey, I have met many wonderful relatives and friends along the way.

I admit, I am a total ship manifest nerd. They fascinate me as I have been able to trace so much through really looking at them. If you are a passenger list nerd like myself, be sure to see page two arrivals of every manifest. A relative told me about my Meisner relatives and recalled when he was little that they were very short...yes, the ship manifest told me she was only 4'10.

For years since a child, I would go on Memorial Day weekend with my grandmother and mother to decorate the graves of my ancestors. There are many favorite locations in the peaceful and beautiful Linn Grove cemetery in Greeley, Colorado, where I once lived. One of my favorites is the little curved road that leads to my Great-Grandparents with the sweet smelling magenta colored peonies. I grew up knowing my Granny Kuntz, or Lizzie to her friends, but had only seen a photo of her husband August Warner. Right by their gravestone are the Warner graves Christoph Werner and Mathilde Renke Werner. I always wondered what they looked like, and who they were. I had little information on them other than "they were my father's parents and he died when I was little", Gram would say. Now as I dig deep into these family roots, I am finding new information and history that I wish I could tell my Gram. I would never have known that they were not Warners but actually Werners or about Volhynia where they married, nor understood the political and historical aspects without the research that has taken me on the journey. All of these moments honoring my loved ones and taking time to remember them by cleaning the gravestones, and placing some sort of flowers, certainly helped create the passion I have for genealogy. Each one has a story...some just lived simple quiet lives and some lived loudly. My faith tells me one day I will know, but for now, finally seeing on a map and studying the history, the hardships, the hope for survival in turbulent times, is an incredible gift.

• Prinz family line from Lauwe, Jablonowka, Samara, Volga, Russia has Germanic origins from Forth, Eckental, Erlangen-Höchstadt, Bavaria, Germany. The surname is found as Printz after U.S. immigration. Michael Prinz and wife Rosina Meisner were among first settlers to Lauwe.

• Mathiesen family line from Stahl am Tarlyk, Stepnoye, Volga, Russia has Germanic origins from Lübeck (Stadt), Schleswig-Holstein. Johann Georg Matthisen, a butcher and his wife Anna were first settlers in Stahl.

• Bretthauer family line from Walter, Saratov, Volga, Russia has Germanic origins from Sterbfritz, Kr. Main-Kinzig, Hessen. Kilian Bretthauer and wife Margareta Müller were first settlers in Walter. Additional descendants come from his first wife Anna Barbara Johann.

• Neubauer family line from Kautz, Saratov, Volga, Russia has Germanic origins from Haßloch, Kr. Bad Dürkheim, Rheinland-Pfalz. Johann Adam Neubauer and Susanna Moser were first settlers to Kautz, with family later moving to the village of Jost, Kukkus, Samara.

• Steinhauer family line from Warenburg, Samara, Volga, Russia has Germanic origins from Wolfenhausen, Kr. Limburg-Weiburg, Hessen in region of Runkel. Johann Wilhelm Steinhauer was a single farmer who married and after his first spouse's death, remarried and moved to the village of Bangert, Kukkus, Samara with his family.

• Meisner family line from Grimm, Saratov, Volga, Russia has Germanic origins and were settlers to the Julianenebene, Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) area prior to immigrating to Russia. Johnn Gottlob Meisner was born in Reichelsheim, Kr. Odenwald, Hessen. He and his brother made their way to Denmark but four years later settled in Grimm.
