  • A. Zie: DNA Veel gestelde vragen

  • Q. I have been trying to link my ancestry.com DNA results with gedcom but don't know how to locate my gedcom id
  • Answer. You need to download your DNA test results from Ancestry and upload the data to GEDmatch.com. GEDmatch.com will give you a GEDmatch ID for your kit. (I'm making the assumption that even though you referred to 'gedcom' you meant 'GEDmatch'. On WikiTree, select 'DNA Test Information' from the dropdown under 'Add' at the top of your profile. That will take you to the page where you can enter information about your Ancestry test (including your GEDmatch ID). Perhaps the comments and answer here on this question can be of help: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/80652/where-can-find-my-gedmatch-id-when-entering-ancestrydna-info

  • Q. How do I get my FTDNA test included in WikiTree?
  • A. This page should provide the information you seek: DNA Tests

  • Q. How do I change my GEDMatch id
  • A. From your own profile, go to DNA under your profile drop-down (D.-44) and choose DNA. From there click on the third tab for DNA tests, and scroll down until you see the Ancestry test you took. There should be a "Edit or enter more details" button off to the right.
From there you can update or change your gedmatch number.

  • Q. where do I set in baptism data and funeral data?
  • A. In the open biography box. After you've created a profile, open it using the edit tab. There is a large area on the left side where you can add anything you want.

  • Q. Waar plaats ik doopgegevens en begrafenisgegevens?
  • A. In het geopende biografie werkveld.
Note redactie:

  • Q. How do I change marriage information? I share a son with the man, but we never married. However, he has acknowledged my son as his and DNA also proves this. How do I change the connection?
  • A. If you have created a profile for your son, go into his profile, click "Edit", and on the right side under "Edit Family" you can click "[add father]". On the next screen you can add the profile number for your son's father (if you have already created a profile for him) or you can enter the data to create a new profile for him. At the bottom of that page you will see the question: Is your son's mother, you, the wife of your son's father? Uncheck this if not. Leave the box checked to indicate that you are married, or unchecked if you are not. Either way, both parents will be connected to your son.

Onderaan die pagina ziet je de vraag: Is your son's mother, you, the wife of your son's father?

  • Q. Why is "Add Child" link missing? I'm editing a family profile that is set to "Open", and I've been able to add biographical notes, upload pictures, add a spouse, etc. I have signed the Honor Code, so I think I have full editing privileges. I am not the 'profile manager' of this particular profile. The "Add Child" link does not appear on the page when I visit.
  • A. You only see the "add child" link when you are on the Trusted List. But you can add a child to this open profile by clicking the Edit tab, then using the links on the right-hand side of the screen.

  • Q. How am I suppose to correct errors on my error report that are before 1500?
  • A. If you don't want (or are turned down) to become pre-1500 qualified, you can post a request to have a pre-1500-qualified member help you with them. Usually there are Data Doctors working various angles of the errors project, so one may come across errors from your report from time to time. And most are eager to help fix any and all errors.
If you are not the profile manager or on the trusted list for such profiles, you can simply ignore them. Just focus on the profiles that you created or manage - use the "Error Report" link under "My WikiTree" instead of the link under your WikiTree ID.

  • Q. Is there a tool to search on locations? is there a way of searching wikitree for people who have the same place of birth (or death) on the database fields? I've just started work on connecting stray pieces of tree and a tool like that could be of great help now that we are getting more standardised name places.
  • A. On the normal Search page at the very bottom is an option to use Google to search within WikiTree profiles for certain words. You can use quotation marks and other symbols too, for example: "James Jones" + "Burlington" + "Vermont" would give me results of WikiTree pages that contain all three.

  • Q. How do I add a second marriage?
  • A. Click the Edit on the tabs at the top of his profile and look over to the right under Edit Family. There is a Spouse section, pick add/remove a spouse, and you can add his second wife details in the page that opens up from there.

  • Q: Delete name on tree. Hi all , Dont ask but somehow I have my name connected to my tree for Robert Carter 1678 and I can not get it off. I am forever making boo boos. Sorry for that. Do you know how to get it off.
  • Answer: Editing Family Connections To change a parent, sibling, spouse, or child relationship:
  1. click to the edit page for one of the people.
  2. Then look in the right column under "Edit Family." Under the Father, Mother, Siblings, Spouses, and Children sections you will see links like "[edit]" and "[add/remove a spouse]".
Removing Family Connections Removing family members is done from the same edit pages as adding and changing them, described in the section above. The one exception is siblings. Sibling relationships are based on the parents. If two people share one or both parents they are considered siblings. To remove a brother or sister you need to remove the incorrect parental connection. For example, let's say Child-X and Child-Y are listed as brothers because Father-Z is listed as the father of both of them. If this is incorrect, you need to remove Father-Z from being listed as the father of one of them. You can do this from the father's page or from the child's page. Removing Family Connections answered 1 minute ago by David Selman G2G6 Pilot https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Editing_Family_Relationships#Removing_Family_Connections
GEDCOM Q&A's

Q. One way to clean up a GEDCOM-created Biography

A. I was asked to show my method for cleaning up a GEDCOM-created biography. I threw together this video because sometimes seeing is easier than reading:

GEDCOM Created Biography Clean up.

You can also take a look at our Help page for GEDCOM-created biographies here.

I hope this is helpful. I'm sure that others have methods that are equally as effective and possibly more efficient. :-)

Q. How do I adjust a surname as I'm importing a GEDCOM? I'm getting ready to import my gedcom. WikiTree wants to skip this entry. What is the best way to adjust for the surname?

A. If you skip it then a new profile for that person will not be created on WikiTree during the import. In that case, when you manually create a new profile for the aforementioned person you can do so with the correct name.

If you have not yet uploaded your gedcom for comparison then you should correct any issues on your own software then create a good gedcom to upload for comparison.

If a profile already exists with an incorrect last name, that can be adjusted from the edit page by a manager.

I hope this is helpful. Please ask any more questions that you have and I'm happy to try and assist. Here is the Help page on Correcting a Last Name at Birth:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Correcting_a_Last_Name_at_Birth On the Help page about GedCompare reports there is a section called "What does 'Skip' mean":

Merging Q&A's

Q. how do I merge my tree with another?

A. We don't really merge trees on WikiTree so much as connect our immediate family to the larger tree. Once you have built your tree to the point where you can connect someone in your tree to a profile already on WikiTree, usually a parent, you're all set.

Just go to the edit page of the profile you want to connect and click on the relationship you want to add, mother, father, or possibly a spouse. Enter the Wiki ID of the profile you're connecting to and click "Go."

Here's a very helpful link: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Adding_Family

1*Q. How to determine merge direction in merge requests? This is a request to have Wikitree make clear the direction of the merge when someone requests a merger. Email requests to a profile manager requesting a merger of two profiles do not indicate which profile is to be merged into the other. Nor does viewing a comparison between the two profiles. If there is help available on this matter, it is not easy to find, or quite an inconvenience to look for when receiving a merge request. How hard could it be to explicitly state which profile is to be merged into the other in the requests?

A. I believe those email requests show the proposed merge destination on the right, but that may not be obvious to the recipient.

For merges with the same last name at birth (LNAB), the merge direction doesn't matter, since the merge will go to the lower-numbered profile. Regardless of merge direction, the person who completes the merge needs to select the data to preserve (not necessarily what's in the right-hand profile), and all of the contents of the text sections will be retained in the new profile until someone (hopefully the person completing the merge) edits them.

Issues can arise when the two profiles have different LNABs. When I propose a merge, I always leave a comment, and if there are different LNABs I comment on merge direction. Those comments are part of the email that goes out. However, experience suggests that the people who receive the merge emails or complete the merge often are unaware of the existence of those comments. Do you have suggestions on how the email could be improved?

2*Q. Merge not default to approve after 30 days?

A. File an unresponsive manager

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Unresponsive_Profile_Managers

3*Q. I merged two trees do the errors go with them?

A. I see that the Error Report for your watchlist includes 13 errors. Most of those "errors" are "Empty profile." That means that there are some entries in the profile data fields (e.g., names, birthdate, etc.), but the text section of the profile is blank. The text section is where we are supposed to provide a more expansive discussion of the person's life than can be provided in the data fields and -- most importantly -- identify the source(s) of the information.

Nowadays, it's not possible to create a profile with a blank text section, but that wasn't the case in 2009 when you created those profiles. To see some standard formatting for the text section of a profile, look at the the "Edit" page for Brodersonia-2 (one that I worked on recently).

Sources Q&A's

Q. FamilySearch Derivative Source - how can I ensure it is reliable data and cite the original? The FamilySearch record https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F4MB-RVD identifies the source as "Maine Births and Christenings, 1739-1900" and identifies the batch and film number. Looking at the film number, this "Contains minutes of town meetings; roads; school district records; intentions of marriage 1773-1804, 1847-1891; marriage records 1787-1802, 1847-1861; a copy of marriage records 1787-1891; family records listing births, deaths, and marriages; another copy of the family records; depositions of births."

This tells me nothing about the actual source. Does this mean I would need to dig into these town records?

A. You can cite that transcription of the record. The usual approach here is to use the text that appears under "Citing this Record" on the FamilySearch page. The right-hand side of the FamilySearch includes the text "bk 4 pg 151", which suggests where the record can be found in the town records.

Ideally, we would also go back to the original record to verify the source. I believe that some films are available for online viewing at FamilySearch, but I can't see that in the catalog record for this one. (There are other WikiTreers who might be able to find it, if it's there.) For now, however, cite the FamilySearch record you found.

1*Q. What is WikiTree's HTML for inserting a "citation needed" into a biography?

Best Answer: A. I use [citation needed].

2*Q. Is it ok to leave notes? There are times when I am researching information about one person and I find floods of info about a group of other people. If it is as simple as adding to their bio I take the time to do it. I even end up adding (and correcting) many findagrave links as sources. But when I'm trying to fix 1 person and find spouses, children, etc on another person I leave notes in the bio. Is this good to do in case I forget about things later?

Best Answer: A. You can add a heading in the bio section below biography and above sources for notes. Like so: == Research Notes ==

Just put all your notes for the person there. It can be very helpful.

3*Q. How do I cite sources? I have always relied on Ancestry and my Rootsmagic program to do my citing for me so I have no idea how to cite sources or where to start. I have my great grandparents and a few more generations I want to put into wikitree so I can start making connections. I don't know anything about citing, or even what a repository is, a term I see in quite a few places. How do I cite things that have been passed down orally? Or things that I've found but I didn't write down where it came from but have notes on?

A. This link should have everything you need to cite your sources.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources

Also, if you use the RootsSearch link in the lower right portion of any profile page you create, FamilySearch makes it very easy to cite any sources you find there with the added bonus of being accessible to everyone for viewing without a subscription.

4*Q. Adding sources as you add profiles I get this question regularly..."I would like to add my profiles, then go back and add the sources, is that OK". My answer is WHY?

I guess, I do not understand the two-step process. As long as I am on the profile, creating it, and obviously I have sources or I wouldn't know anything about the person. Isn't it easier to just add them at that point? Am I missing something? asked May 16, 2016 in Policy and Style by Robin Lee

Best Answer: I will not add a profile without a source, at least the one I used to create the profile from, and can not relate to why someone would create an unsourced profile, I did do it once just to see what it looked like but that was a special case. I try to edit the profiles I manage working from the one's that have the oldest edit date and working forward but I do also try to add others from the source document that I find them on so that I do not have to try and find that source again, I feel that by doing things that way I am working smarter and not harder. answered May 16, 2016 by Dale Byers G2G6 Pilot

Photo's Q&A's

Q. How do I add non-background pictures?

A. Uploading and Editing Photos and Source Images:

Photographs and source images are added to WikiTree in the same way as regular photos. First click to the profile page of a person or thing. You can find these on your Watchlist. From the profile, click the Images tab and look for the "upload" link.

On the image upload page, you can select "photo" or "source image".

The image type can be changed at any time from the image details page.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Image_Types

1*Q. Should the addition of Images to an existing profile be fully researched prior to inclusion?

Best Answer: A. Yes they certainly should be. I've removed several images on profiles that were actually for other people. The PGM migrants emigrated from England to England. Shouldn't the flag be the same?

In this case it's redundant. PGM implies by it's nature, and title that these were immigrants so the migrating ancestor template is overkill in my opinion.

2* Q. Can someone tell me how to add a picture to a post in the weekend chat please? Does the picture have to have already been uploaded to Wikitree? Thanks, Stella Jones asked 1 day ago in The Tree House by Stella Jones

Best Answer: Hi Stella, I have added an explanation for it to last weeks weekend chat so I copied this from there and it works for the whole G2G of course, not just the weekend chat ;) Hope it helps !

To add an image here, if you edit your answer, look at the grey box above the field where you type, the one with all the edit options, look at the bottom row, first you'll see a little chainlink (if you want to add a link here in G2G, you can select a part of the txt and click on the little chainlink, it opens in a small new window where you can paste the URL (link) click ok and if you did it right the part of the txt you selected, now works like a link and is blue (after save people can click on it).

Now for adding an image it's a bit similar, right next to the chainlinks you see a little square with a mountain and sun (or moon or whatever) . Now if you see a nice online image or have a picture added here at WikiTree of something you would like to add here, (the privacy setting always must be open) you can rightclick on that image or picture and click copy image adress, now click in edit on the little square with the mountain/sun, it also opens in a new window, paste image URL there and click on width, now you will see the image and you can adjust the higth and width (size) if you think the size is right click ok and the image is added here ;)

So you first will have to right click on the image you want to add here (it must be online somewhere or at one of your profiles for example) now if you right click on the online image, a sort of dropdown menu will appear, among the options you will see copy image address, that's the one you need, so just click on it (Copy image address) (now you have copied the URL (link, image adress) and that link you can paste in the URL field (the one that you see when you click on the little square with the mountain and sun) , so past the link into the field where it says URL. And after you pasted the link (= URL) you just put your mouse in the little field where it says width, if the link (image adress) is added correct, now the image will appear in the field where it before said: lorem ipsum etc. etc. And you can adjust the width and hight if you think it perhaps is too large or something, and when you think it looks fine just click ok and the image is added to your g2g ;) Let's try if you can add the same image as me ;

1. I went here Google Kerk 2. see the image of the church (Grote Kerk Enschede) ? I am right clicking on it and clicked on Copy Image Address 3. now I'm clicking on the little square box with the mountains and sun and pasting the link to the field where it says URL 4. I have clicked on width and now the image appears in the field and I adjusted the width to 125 (only changed the width, the hight automatically is adjusted now) 5. and voila there it is... answered 1 day ago by Bea Wijma G2G6 Pilot (143,090 points) selected 1 day ago by Stella Jones Link to question and answer: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/426725/pictures-in-the-weekend-chat

3*Q. Is there a way to see all of my Photos from my Watchlist in one place? In an attempt to make sure I am copyright compliant, I would like to review all the photos I have uploaded onto WikiTree since the beginning and make sure. I have permission to use those photos. Any photos that others might have loaded onto profiles I manage as well.

Is there a faster way to see all of the photos other than going through my entirely large watchlist one profile at a time? Same goes for my contributions. Too large a list to scroll through.

Any help appreciated. Thank you!

Best Answer: A. On your watchlist, there are several view options (below the tabs at the top of the page). Click on "Images" to see all of your photos.

Profile Q&A's

Q. How do I create a link BACK to a free space profile

A. I think you are looking for a "What Links Here" URL. To create that, add the following text on your free-space page:

Text that you want to display on your page For example:

Other WikiTree pages that link to this page will create a hyperlinked line that starts with a bullet and says: "Other WikiTree pages that link to this page." If your page is a Source page that is designed to be cited as a source, you would use:

WikiTree Profiles that use this source Q. Is it possible to add siblings when parents are unknown?

A. when you add a sibling to someone's profile, if both profiles do not currently have at least one parent connection then WikiTree automatically creates a new profile for the father and uses "Unknown" as his first name.

There is something you should be aware of, though - you will automatically become the profile manager of the new father profile and you will not receive any notification of this.

Q. What happens to a profile when the manager dies or ceases to manage it due to disability?

A. In the Help pages there is some direction here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Death_of_a_Member

The Help pages also cover the Advance Directive:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Advance_Directive

1* Q. I am new here!

A. Where to begin?

You currently are registered as a guest member. Read the Help:Community_Membership page to see if this is a community you want to join. If you decide to join, read and sign the Honor Code so you can become a full member. Your profile has the privacy setting of Private with Public Biography and Family Tree. Be sure to read about the privacy settings and set your profile to the one that you are comfortable with. Since you are interested in posting DNA results you may want to leave the setting as it is. Add some information to your profile - at least gender. You are not required to fill in everything. Take a look at my profile or the profiles of other members to get an idea of what appears to others. My privacy setting is listed as Private with Public Biography and Family Tree, if that's the example you want to see. Create profiles for your parents. I recommend adding one or two profiles before deciding to import a GEDCOM so you can see how easy it is. Before you decide to import a GEDCOM, please read Help:Before importing a GEDCOM. If you want to import one, do yourself a favor and do a test import, perhaps just your grandparents and great grandparents. Look at the profiles a GEDCOM creates and the work it will take to clean it up. Compare that to the time it took to create your parents profiles without a GEDCOM, and decide which method you prefer. That should keep you busy for a while! Oh, and please come back to this forum with any questions you may have. Youwill find a lot of very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people here.

2. Q. How do I enter an illegitimate sibling?

A. You just add them as a child of their biological parents. It will all fall into place.

Here is a link that explains it in better detail:

3* Q. System not allowing me accessto develop tree. Have no idea as to why Wiki Tree is blocking my access to the site. I want to add my family tree and believe I took all of the steps needed that would allow me to post.

A. Please finish the process of filling out your tags and clicking on Volunteer button as explained in the initial email. Once you do that you will be confirmed by one of our friendly greeters!!

Here's how to do the Tags:

You may want to add some tags on your page indicating a family name for one tag and a specific location like a country, state etc you are interested in, for another tag and then add other surnames or locations as tags as desired. That way you will be connected to others with the same interest.

Click on http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Following to add or remove tags. Be sure to add comments explaining why you're following the tags. Those appear on your profile too.

To find out if we have some of your ancestors, Just go to the top of your page by the WikiTree logo and fill in the search bars next to the magnifying glass icon. You will be surprised how many people we have with that surname!!

If you need help using Wiki Tree, If your not sure how to use WikiTree check out this page: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/How_to_use_WikiTree

5*Q. What's the current preferred way to fix 603 USA too early in birth location? When I started with Data Doctors, somewhere I read the fix for "603 USA too early in birth location" (and similar errors) was to use the FamilySearch-recommended "British Colonial America" in place of USA. But now I'm seeing suggestions about "Colony of Virginia" instead. What's the preferred method for correcting these errors?

Best Answer: A. Thanks for working on these errors. The first, most important thing to do on these errors is to simply remove USA.

Please do not add British Colonial America since our country has never been called that.

If you want to go an extra step in the process, you can research (WikiPedia has great info for this) what the colony was called during the time of the birth, date, or marriage and use that name in place of the "state" name. Some states have gone through different versions of names over time I have found.

The colony of Virginia discussion was specific to Virginia.

6*Q. Merging Profiles: Changing order of merge? On a pre-1500 merge this morning, I noticed that the original profile got merged into the newer profile. I understand that this is likely the result of the way the proposed merge was initiated, but I'm wondering if there is a way to prevent this? Must you cancel one merge and initiate a new one or is there a simple way of changing the order of the merge?

Best Answer: A. If an older profile was merged into a newer profile, the spelling of the ID must have been different. If the spellings are different before the merge there is a message at the top of the page, asking if that's the correct spelling, if not reverse the merge.

For spellings that are the same if the merge has been generated backward (lower into higher), the computer will ask you to reverse the merge.

Sometimes one will be ppp'd which requires merge into that ID. If it's not the lowest number, it will need to have the ppp removed first.
