Growing up, I rarely met cousins. As an adult, I have often met with fourth cousins along a specific line and have enjoyed the discovery that we have more similarities than you would expect. I am interested in meeting any cousin, even fourth or fifth cousins -- or perhaps even more distant! -- who would love to connect.

Biography

Roger C Shipman was born the 12th of 15 children. Descended from Edward Shipman, who came from Hull, England to Saybrook, Connecticut in 1639, as well as from Isaiah Cooper, whose family emigrated on the wagon train of 1843. the first in which the wagons reached Oregon.[1][2]

Formerly a software engineer; an editor.

In connection with the Hewitt-Matheny-Cooper Family Association, I recently helped publish Into the Eye of the Setting Sun, by my gggrandmother Charlotte Matheny Kirkwood. This is a first-hand account of the Oregon Trail and her recollections of the years prior to Oregon statehood. A fascinating memoir!

Roger - So why did you remove Catherine Elliott 1768-1811, Elliott-6902 (wife of Samuel Shipman) as mother of Daniel Harvey Shipman ??

Regards, - Doug Smith

posted by Doug Smith
Because the evidence you added today, casting doubt on Joel's parentage, the uncertainty of the marriage date to Catherine Elliott, and the paragraph that was added the other day concerning John, Joel, and Daniel indicated that although Catherine Elliott gave Samuel ten children, the first three were by another spouse, according to the contemporary account of his oldest three children. I know about the family Bible, but it does not list the mothers of any of the children. So there is nothing to contradict the fact that Samuel was married three times, not two, that his first three children were by his first wife, the next ten (of which are listed nine) are by Catherine, and the last by Margaret Henderson. In other words, I believed the source since it seemed credible. I won't quibble, and will leave things alone, as I not from the area and have no way to find better sources other than online, but I urge you to do further research (perhaps DNA evidence of the "mystery" wife could surface if enough descendants were found to have taken DNA tests) to ensure that what I created is incorrect. Thank you for your diligence in establishing what you think you know. As I said, I don't, but trusted that source.

Hi Roger, finally figured out how to make an account. Was wondering how far you got with Hurlbert family along with the shipman family.

20 years ago a family member made a book about the Generations, and I now have it. Wanting to make sure this information is correct if possible.

Thanks Sandy

Roger was wondering if you would like more information on Erastus Hurlbert and Annie shipman. I have been working on the Hurlbert side for over 20 years. Let me know if I can help. Erastus and Annie were my great grandparents.

Hello Roger, It appears you would like to merge your John B Pennington with Mine.

I believe your birth date for John is incorrect, he was not born in 1812 but 1820. I think we need to confirm that information before we merge. Thank you, Janice Haney-Cook

Janice,

On WikiTree, there is no "yours" or "mine." There is only one tree, and no one has a profile reserved for use.

So far at least, "your" John B Pennington shows no evidence, but "mine" shows in all the registrations, 1850 census, and 1900 census as being born in 1812. But also married to the same person shows that it is the same.

Roger, The 1850, 1860, 1870, & 1880 census show John as being born in 1820. 1900 & 1910 census he reports as being born in 1812.

I believe he changed the year due to older people were more revered and he was playing off of that. The older you were the more respected you were. John's first wife died in 1851 so he doesn't show up with same wife, he was married 3 times.

Hello Roger….sorry, I dont seem to be a cousin……23% of separation through the Butler line. It is all fascinating, though.

Hi Roger

Thank you for your note. I had a look back a few months, but can find no reference of the work I did. If you can let me have the Wikitree Url for your sister in law's profile it might jog the memory.

Thanks Roger, I have removed John Petrie as a husband of Agnes Glasford.

I rarely use Wikitree, so figuring out how to delete the relationship took a lot of trial and error. Despite information from a trusted genealogist, I find no documentation of my John Petrie being married to an Agnes Glasford.

Thanks for commenting on Almeda Barbetti's page, I merged two individuals and somehow didn't catch that the Unknown surname for the first overwrote the correct name.
Hi Roger! Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm just trying to find my way around this rather complex site.
