Biography

Jone was likely born in Sussex, England but no record of her birth has been found. She was married to William Claiton in 1631 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England, and is believed to have had five children with him. She died and was buried in Boxgrove in 1644.

Marriage

Joan appears in the Boxgrove parish archives when she married William Claiton on 30 October 1631.[1]

Children

The parish archives record William as the father of 5 children; Jone (Joan) is assumed to be their mother:

i. William Claiton - Baptized 9 December 1632 in Boxgrove.[2][3]
ii. Joan Claiton - Baptized 23 August 1635 in Boxgrove. Just before her 8th birthday, Joan was buried in Boxgrove on 20 July 1644,[4] her mother had died 3 months earlier.[5]
iii. Elizabeth Clayton - Baptized 11 February 1637 in Boxgrove.[6] Elizabeth was buried in Boxgrove on 16 October 1638,[7] she had aged only a little more than 10 months.
iv. Richard Claiton - Baptized 13 September 1640 in Boxgrove, Worcester. Born to "Willia[m] and Jone Claiton."[8]
v. Thomas Claiton - Baptized 26 February 1642 in Boxgrove.[9]

Death and legacy

Joan died in April 1644 and was buried in St. Mary and St. Blaise Church on 27 April 1644 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England. The record of her death states that she was "Joan Claiton,"[5] the "wife of William Claiton jun."[10][11]
